-----------cut here and save the above---------------
"Simple" steps to making a UUCP Map.
1) Save the above file, then call up a pure text editor on it.
2) Change all occerences of the word castle to the name of your
system. Leave the fidonet.org alone. The stuff on the #N
line tells human readers that you are gatewaying to that domain.
3) The #S line calls for your CPU type and the OS that you are running,
separated by a semi-colon.
4) The #O line should reflect the name of your organization or sponsoring
company/club/etc.
5) #C is the name of the SysOp of the BBS.
6) All nodes are required to have a postmaster mail alias. Follow step 2
on the "castle" but leave the rest. Make sure you have an alias for
postmaster on your system. This is a UUCP and Internet requirement, not
one of my own manufacture. It is required by RFC821.
7) #T is the *voice* number for the person in #C, or the main voice line for
#O in international format.
8) #P is the postal address of #O or #C. Don't include the string from #O
again; The #O and #P fields are intended to be concatenated.
9) This is probably the hardest. It is the latitude and longitude of the
site in degrees, minutes and (optionally) seconds, followed by a
letter indicating East/West (Longitude) or North/South (Latitude).
It can probably be obtained from a local library or university. The
"city" at the end there means that the figures given are for the
city you're in, and are not exact for your site. The entire
message about this entry can be found in the README for UUCP in
comp.mail.maps. (as can documentation on the rest of this stuff.)
This is so that the UUCP Project can make pretty geographic maps of
the UUCP/USENET, which will now include these FidoNet gateways...
10) A space separated list of the names of your netnews news feeds.
11) #R means remarks. I am using it to say my fidonode number and that the
hostmaster for the domain can be reached at this site. You will
probably want to put your fidonet node number there at least. Note there
is only one line for this, more comments can be given later.
12) #W is "this was written by"; "on." The time doesn't need to be that
precise, but it should reflect the date (Month/Day/Year) at least.
Note that all of the addresses given do not show paths. Those will
be figured out by the pathalias map system.
13) Now for the fun part. The next two lines show the aliases and
routing for the system. (Who it is, and who it talks with).
castle = castle.fidonet.org, f302.n105.z1.fidonet.org
"system castle is also known as castle.IFNA.ORG, f302.n105.z1.ifna.org,
The dual lines will be deleted in June, they are just for the domain
name transition. Note that all AKA node numbers for your node should
also be listed in this way. You do not have to use one line, a trailing
comma means " look at the next line for the next entry," but entries
can not be split over two or more lines. (you can't say n302 on one line
and .n015.z1.fidonet.org on the next.)
castle orstcs(POLLED), verdix(EVENING), agora(EVENING)
"system castle gateways mail to orstcs rarely, and with verdix and agora
every night."
castle .n134.z1.fidonet.org
This is the real magic here. It means that anything ending with any of
these titles goes via castle, so each network is represented in one "word"
and I don't have to list every node. Ain't it wonnerful? Verdix is my feed
from the UUCP and Internet, so it calls me every time mail comes in,
and I call it when ever I generate mail going out. See the file README for a
more complete list of what can go in the (). Note that I don't have
my entire map here as I list every net in region 17 (except for 105,
which is handled by Buskers), if you gateway for more than one net/region
tell me what they are and I will put them in your map in the most economical
manner.
After you get this all done, send the map to me at 105/302 or
{verdix, agora, orstcs}!nomad or nomad@castle.fidonet.org (the things in the
{}s mean "choose one of these.") and I will use it to create the MX
records for your net (for the Internet) and will send it on to the UUCP
Project for inclusion in the maps. If you have a problem with it I will
let you know and we can correct it. Please note that I would like you
to find a local InterNet site that will forward mail from the Internet
to you, then let me know what it is. I will be posting to some
newsgroups asking for help in this, but if you find one on your own it
saves me a lot of work. This is the third draft, so there are probably
a few typos and more than a few spell-os, but please have pity on me,
I'm trying. ("Yes, very.")
If you have any questions, feel free to write to me at the above
addresses, or at any of the following:
