Your Monthly Shareware Review
By George Stark
Hocus Pocus
Apogee
Requires: 386 or better, 567K free, VGA, HD HIGHLY recommended.
Did you like the three-way scrolling backgrounds in Duke Nukem?
Did you also dislike the jerky animation? Well, Apogee has outdone them-
selves with Hocus Pocus, their new action/adventure game. Your character
is Hocus Pocus, Magician's apprentice. In the introductory shareware
episode, you are faced with finding your way through nine levels of a
castle, gathering crystal balls. Your enemies include walking alligators,
flying devils, dragons, bears, and many others. Your defense is the ability
to cause lightning bolts to shoot from your fingertips. You will, in the
course of your journey through the beautifully drawn interior of the castle,
find an occasional bottle of a mysterious white potion which gives you
rapid fire, which comes in quite handy. If you see a bottle of the white
potion, chances are you'll need it soon. There are also green bottles
containing a health-restoration potion. Hidden rooms, and puzzles which must
be solved to complete the levels, combine with advice from the Old Wizard
from time to time to create an enjoyable gaming experience. Your final
test comes at the hands of the Mad Monks. Defeat them, and prove to the
Wizard that you're worthy of the title "Magician". Supports ALL major sound
cards, joystick/gamepad optional, can be played with keyboard controls.
$30 registration gets you episodes 2 and 3. Try this one, it's guaranteed
to make you smile.
World Factbook
Author unknown
Going through some files on a CD Rom disk, I happened on this gem.
The World Factbook 92 is a HUGE text file (2.4 megs) containing more
information about the world we live in than you'd ever need to know. While
no credit is given to the author(s) who compiled this prodigious work, it
remains an impressive stockpile of facts and information about the political
world in which we live. The Factbook covers the countries of the world, from
Afghanistan to Zanzibar, with approximately 12 pages of information about
each nation, including Geography, the People, Government, Economy, Communi-
cations, Defense, and a wealth of sub-topics. The appendices include a lists
of all 264 nations of the world, and their possesions, territories, and
dependent areas, information about illicit drugs, The United Nations System,
and in-depth information about International Organizations and Groups. This
file would be an asset to any student of international affairs, as well as a
near-comprehensive reference work on the world community. The World Factbook
is in ASCII text format, and can be viewed with any ASCII viewer or editor.
Grab this one before school starts, and be ready for your Social Studies
class! The zip file contains no information concerning donations, or any
registration charge, so I would assume it's free.
NeoPaint v2.2
OSCS Software Development, Inc.
NeoPaint is the ultimate image editing program for DOS! Until now,
sophisticated image editing has required spending hundreds of dollars on
software and hardware. At $45 (U.S.), NeoPaint sets a new standard in
price/performance. NeoPaint is as simple to use as any paint program, yet
with many powerful features usually found only in high-end picture publishing
systems. Betterstill, NeoPaint is NOT a Microsoft Windows program, so
it's easy to install, set up and use. NeoPaint's state of the art GUI
interface allows you to edit and view multiple images at the same time in
resolutions as high as 1024x768.
When you compare NeoPaint with high end graphics packages costing hundreds
of dollars, you'll discover that NeoPaint gives you tremendous power at
any price!
Features of Neo Paint v2.2 include support for PCX, GIF, and TIFF formats,
Hercules, EGA, VGA, and SVGA up to 1024x768x256 resolution, view and edit
multiple images in sizeable windows, more than 30 drawing tools, multiple
sizes and styles of fonts, over 20 effects, multilevel zoom for precise
image editing, color control for 2, 16, and 256 color images, support for
over 300 printers, including laser, dot matrix, and color printers, supports
EMS/XMS and Virtual Disk memory for manipulating large images, and supports
the international characters used in most languages, and many, many more.
To use NeoPaint you will need an IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2 or 100% compatible
computer (286 or better is HIGHLY recommended), EGA, VGA, SVGA, or Hercules
monochrome or compatible graphics card/monitor (no CGA), minimum of 640K free
RAM,a hard disk, MS-DOS, PC-DOS 3.1 or higher, or DR-DOS, a Microsoft,
Logitech or compatible pointing device, and a printer (optional).
All of the programs reviewed this month may be found in the transfer section
of Beggar's Tomb, (410) 675-9175, or e-mail George Stark at one of the
