The Client
__________
The Client is based on the John Grisham book. I am only half-way
through the book, so I don't have much to compare it to. This is a
typical Grishman movie with one or two good guys that have no one else
to trust, but themselves. In this case two brothers Mark Sway (Brad Renfro,
his movie debut) and Ricky Sway witness a Mafia Lawyer kill himself, because
he knows the location of the body of a Senator. The lawyer sees Mark, and
drags him into the car, and tells him the location in the body. Mark
eventually escapes. Ricky goes into shock, so he has to stay in the hospital,
where Mark and his mother stays with him. The Mafia is after Mark, and
the FBI wants to find out what he knows. The US Attorney for Louisiana Roy
Foltrigg (played by Tommy Lee Jones) wants to find out what Mark knows as
well. He and his team of lawyers try to intimidate him into to telling the
truth, and Mark knows they will. He then hires an attorney, after he sees
one parading around the hospital. He ends up hiring rookie attorney
Reggie Love (Susan Sarandon). She helps Mark, and together they must
fight the Feds, and prevent Foltrigg from arresting Mark for "Obstruction
of Justice." They must also avoid the Mafia, and keep each other alive. As
they find out the truth can be deadly. Even though, this is much like
"The Firm" and "The Pelican Brief"; I throughly enjoyed it. It was pretty
predictable. Renfro has great potential, and is far superior to Macauly(sp?)
Culkin. Sarandon was perfect for the role, as the fiesty strong lawyer. Jones
was brilliant, and intelligent as usual. He is such a versitle actor! The
supporting cast was great, and all of the characters were throughly
developed. You could really love Mark Sway and Reggie Love. You could have
mixed feelings for Roy Foltrigg, and you were really able to hate the bad
guys. Here is some advice: If you don't like John Grisham; don't see this
film!
