The One And Only
O K A M I
Internet and Mausnet Mail And News Reader And Writer
... also known as...
O K A M I N E W S R E A D E R
... also known as...
O
Welcome to the Okami Newsreader. Documentation should be read in the
following order:
1) maus.doc (for Mausnet users only)
2) oenglish.doc
3) beta.doc (sorry, still only in German)
4) *.man
Since beta.doc changes with each new version, it must always be read
prior to installation and operation of new versions.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
O may be copied free from charge. It may also be distributed in
commercial public domain libraries. However, anyone who buys the
program from such a library will probably kick himself mercilessly in
the a* upon discovering he could have gotten it free from the next BBS
- and he will do even worse when realizing he has no modem at all and
will therefore have not much use for it. No money may be charged for
the program itself. Anyone who pays more than 5 dollars for a floppy
disk with O has the right to ask the surcharge back.
O is neither public domain nor freeware. These romantic-idealistic
concepts seem to have gone out of fashion. O isn't shareware either,
because "shareware", in most cases, means "commercial ware" which is
used first and then paid for - to get a full version plus a printed
manual. Not so with O. There is only one version - the full version -
and anyone who wants a printed manual, must print the instructions
himself.
O is SNOBWARE. A snob, in this sense, is a person who thinks that
quality is proportional to price and that a product, which is free and
for which one doesn't have to pay - because its creator doesn't want
to profit from it financially - must necessarily be of poor quality,
badly designed, sloppily programmed, and altogether junk. O is not of
poor quality, nor badly designed, nor sloppily programmed, and
certainly not junk. Therefore, snobs have to pay a so-called "snobware
contribution" for the use of O. The amount of this contribution is to
be decided by the user-snob himself, provided it exceeds the sum of 25
dollars. The money must be remitted to an aid and relief organization
like Amnesty International, Foster Parents, etc, or a society for the
protection of animals. Not allowed are religious or political
organizations, or political parties. There is no discount for students
or old-age pensioners: if one is a snob, one can afford it.
Please inform me by email of any contribution paid and to whom.
Those who are not snobs - i.e. those who believe in the existence of
free software which is sound, bugfree, well tested, well supported,
and for which one doesn't have to cough up - do not have to pay a
snobware contribution. They may use O for free, as long as they want.
NEVERTHELESS: non-snobs are also asked to pay their snobware
contribution in the amount of what they would be prepared to spend for
a program like O on the commercial market. * THIS IS, HOWEVER, NO
PREREQUISITE FOR THE USE OF O. * In these cases also I would like to
be informed by email of the amount paid and to whom.
To stimulate the payment of snobware contributions by non-snobs, there
is fame and honour to be gotten, in the form of an entry in the Hall
of Fame, for the highest amount paid.
LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE USE OF O
None whatsoever.
ADVERTISING
No advertising for commercial products, mail boxes, BBSs, or suchlike
in the distribution packet of O is allowed. If you find any such
files, rest assured they do not come from me but probabbly from some
overambitious, publicity seeking sysop. They should be deleted before
the next upload. Anyone who includes any form of advertising in the O
distribution packet, will be obliged to pay a snobware contribution of
at least 50 dollars.
EMAIL SUBSCRIPTION
Those who are able to receive big uuencoded files by email can have
new versions of O sent to them automatically. Please subscribe by
sending me an email message.
SOURCE CODE
Anyone interested in O's source code - to build in a new feature, to
fix a bug, or just to have a look - can get it under the following
conditions:
- Redistribution of the source code is not allowed and the use of
subroutines in other programs is only allowed after consultation.
- All changes in the source code will be put at the disposal of the
O community free of charge (best mail them to me in the form of a
diff file).
You can get the source code sent to you by email (drop me a message),
or by post, in the following way:
- Send two formatted floppy disks (720 KB) to my address, together
with a *stamped* and self-addressed envelope. Please do not
forget to include postage.
- Include postage (three times should be enough). If you do not
live in Germany, you must find another way to remunerate the
postage.
SUPPORT
There is a newsgroup dedicated to the Okami Newsreader. It is a
Mausnet group which is exported to Usenet. The name of the group in
Mausnet is "OKAMI" and in Usenet "maus.sys.atari.okami". It is open to
all O users. In Mausnet, participants must report first to the group
leader before they are allowed to write in the group.
All things private, please email to:
