==========
IMPORTANT!
==========
If you wish to play this game using your computer's 3D-hardware (recommended),
it is likely that you will have to install the latest driver for your 3D-hardware.
This game requires Direct3D drivers (as opposed to OpenGL, Glide or anything else.)
For details, please read through the question-and-answer sections below.

ABOUT THIS README FILE
======================
This file contains last-minute information that may not be in the manual.
If you are having a particular problem with the game, please see the
section below, FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.
==========================
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
==========================
Q: How do I run the game?
A: It is advisable to restart your computer if you have been running any other
applications, apart from the setup program.
The game should always be played with as few other applications running as possible,
and it is best to wait for hard disk activity to stop before running the game.
To run the game, click Start, Programs, Virgin Interactive, Jimmy White's 2 - Cueball,
then select which version of the game you want to play.
Q: What's the difference between the 'hardware accelerated' and 'software' versions?
A: The 'hardware accelerated' version of the game will do its best to use any
3D-hardware (or 3D-card) that may be in your PC.
The 'software' version doesn't require any 3D-hardware, but it is inferior to
the 'hardware accelerated' version. We thoroughly recommend that you purchase
a 3D-card as this will make the game much more enjoyable.
Q: What is 3D-hardware?
A: It is hardware in your computer specifically designed to draw 3D scenes.
Many new computers are shipped with such hardware, although it is fairly
straightforward to buy 3D-hardware (or a 3D-card) and install it yourself.
This game will do its best to take advantage of any such hardware in your
computer.
Q: How do I know if I have any 3D-hardware in my PC?
A: The easiest way is to try to run the 'hardware accelerated' version of the
game; if the game fails to run, no 3D-hardware was detected.
Q: What is DirectX and Direct3D?
A: DirectX is written by Microsoft. Generally, it acts as an interface between
an application (e.g. this game) and the hardware in your PC (such as 3D-hardware,
mouse, keyboard etc.) This game uses DirectX version 6.1, which is automatically
installed when you install the game. If you have a later version of DirectX
installed on your PC, installing the game won't overwrite the newer version,
and the game should run without any problems.
Direct3D is a component of DirectX, and is related to the communication between
an application (e.g. this game) and your 3D-hardware.
===============
TROUBLESHOOTING
===============
Q: When I try to run the 'hardware accelerated' version, my PC immediately stops
responding.
A: 1) Try restarting your PC. If necessary, use the reset button, but don't switch
it off then on again. Then try to run the game again.
2) Check that your 3D-hardware is supported, see the SUPPORTED 3D-HARDWARE
section below.
3) Try running the 'software' version of the game. If this fails, see the
LAST RESORTS section below.
4) You may need to update the drivers for your 3D-hardware. See the
3D-HARDWARE DRIVERS section below.
Q: When I try to run the 'hardware accelerated' version, an error box appears.
A: The game will do its best to explain to you what has gone wrong. You may see
a message like:
INIT: no 3D-hardware detected!
which may indicate that your PC has no 3D-hardware, while trying to run the
'hardware accelerated' version of the game. Each error message has a
capitalised code at the front, thus:
INIT: indicates that a problem occured while trying to initialise the game.
TEX: indicates that there was a problem with the texture management.
SCREEN: indicates that there was a problem with screen handling.
If you do not understand the message or you don't know what to do about it:
1) Check that your 3D-hardware is supported, see the SUPPORTED 3D-HARDWARE
section below.
2) Try restarting your PC, then run the game again.
3) Try running the 'software' version of the game. If this doesn't work,
see the LAST RESORTS section below.
4) You may need to update the drivers for your 3D-hardware. See the
3D-HARDWARE DRIVERS section below.
Q: I want to uninstall the game but I don't want to lose my room-saves.
How do I back them up?
A: You need to find the directory where the game was installed.
The default is:
C:\Program Files\Virgin Interactive\Jimmy White's 2 - Cueball
From that directory, you need to back-up (copy) the 'save' directory to
somewhere else on your hard disk. To recover your save-games after a future
re-install, copy your backed-up 'save' directory over the newly installed
'save' directory.
===================
3D-HARDWARE DRIVERS
===================
Q: What is a 3D-hardware driver?
A: Also known as a 3D-card driver, it is part of the software interface that this game
uses to communicate with the 3D-hardware in your computer. You may need to update your
driver if the game is not running properly, e.g. if you see an error box when
running the game, or the game doesn't run very smoothly, or the graphics appear to
flicker.
Q: I need the latest driver for my 3D-hardware. How do I get it?
A: The best way is to download it using the internet. Alternatively you could contact
your 3D-hardware manufacturer, and they should be able to send you a disk containing
the latest driver. Some sites for 3D-hardware drivers are:
http://www.drivershq.com (under the 'video' link)
http://www.download.com
http://www.3dfx.com (for 3Dfx based cards)
This game requires Direct3D drivers (as opposed to OpenGL, Glide or anything else.)
You will usually download a single file that contains the driver you want. The downloaded
file is often in the form of a self-extracting .EXE, which actually contains several
smaller files.
For information on installing these files, please consult the documentation that
acccompanies the driver or contact the device manufacturer.
=====================
SUPPORTED 3D-HARDWARE
=====================
This game uses Direct3D to support most recent 3D-hardware chipsets.
All of the following 3D-chipsets have been tested:
- 3Dfx Voodoo1
- 3Dfx Voodoo2
- 3Dfx Banshee
- 3Dfx Voodoo Rush
- Intel 740
- Matrox MGA-G200
- ATI Rage Pro/Turbo (see note below)
- S3/Hercules Terminator
- Permedia
- NVidia TNT
- Rendition 2000
Note: ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP (or ATI-264VT3) cards do not play videos correctly.
This results in a 'Press Escape' message being displayed whenever a video
should be displayed. This issue is beyond our control and ATI are aware of it.
Please check ATI's web site for latest information about this issue.
Some older 3D-cards do not work, such as the early Matrox Mystique cards.
Videologic's PowerVR cards also do not work.
Your card must have at least 4Mb of memory on your 3D card, or it must be AGP.
Most recent cards qualify for this, although for details you will have to
refer to your system documentation or 3D-hardware documentation.

NETWORK 2-PLAYER GAMES
======================
1. Internet Play
You can play the game across an internet connection using the TCP/IP connection
protocol. Both players must first connect to the internet via their ISPs before
connecting within the game.
The player starting the network game session must find out the machine's IP address
as allocated by the ISP. To find the IP address, run the WINIPCFG.EXE from the
Windows folder. The player must then communicate this IP address to the connecting
player (by telephone, email etc).
The starting player must then start a network session within the game in the usual way,
with TCP/IP selected. The joining player must also join with TCP/IP selected, and type
in the starting player's IP address. This will establish the connection.
2. Using TCP/IP on a LAN, or with PC's with both LAN and Modem connections
You may connect using the TCP/IP connection protocol across a LAN. However, you
may encounter problems if you also have a modem device installed on your machine.
This occurs where both the modem and network adapter card are recognised as TCP/IP
devices, and the game's TCP/IP connection is routed through the modem rather than
the network adapter card. The easiest solution is to install the IPX protocol for
your network adapter card, and establish a game connection using the IPX/SPX
connection option.
3. Modem Connections
Aswell as internet play, the game also supports direct modem-to-modem connections using
the TAPI protocol. Note that if you have more than one modem installed, the game uses
the default modem device.
