INFOBUSINESS MEGA MOVIE GUIDE v3.5 MULTIMEDIA CD-ROM READ ME
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*****************************IMPORTANT********************************
INSTALLATION
------------
* If you encounter installation problems and cannot successfully complete
the install, copy files from the \INSTALL subdirectory on the CD-ROM
to a directory on your hard drive (ie. C:\INFOB)
Example: Copy D:\INSTALL\*.* C:\INFOB
Make sure the files are not "read only". In the C:\INFOB directory type
attrib -r.
Example: attrib -r
You will then need to create a program icon in Windows(TM) with the
following COMMAND LINE:
<DRIVE LETTER>:\INFOB\MTB30RUN.EXE <DRIVE LETTER>:\INFOB\MEGA95.EXE
(Example: C:\INFOB\MTB30RUN.EXE C:\INFOB\MEGA95.EXE)
You will need to also set the WORKING DIRECTORY TO:
<CD-ROM DRIVE LETTER>:\
(Example: D:\)
Change the icon to (ie. C:\INFOB\MEGA35.ICO)
* Problem: No "INFOBUSINESS PRODUCTS" group of icons after installation
The user may have too many groups in Windows (ie. main,
applications, accessories, etc.). Either groups were created
for products that have been deleted and the groups need to be
cleaned up by deleteing them or groups need to be cleaned and
combined. Usually if there are a lot of groups, there will too
icons as well. Keep your Windows clean by deleting icons that
are no longer valid (single-click the icon, then press DELETE)
STARTING THE PRODUCT
--------------------
* If the product will not start, but gives no error message (the cursor
turns into an hourglass for a second, then back to normal and the product
never appears) then your problem is most likely your sound driver. See
the section on SOUND PROBLEMS below.
TEXT PROBLEMS
-------------
* If the text in the product looks like Greek or some foreign language,
the problem is with a font. This error occurs when the system TrueType
font families Arial and Times New Roman have been removed, or if the
TrueType fonts have been turned off. In the MAIN window, double click on
the CONTROL PANEL icon and then double click on the FONTS icon. Now click
on the TRUETYPE button and make sure the ENABLE TRUETYPE FONTS option is
checked. Now, scroll down through the list of INSTALLED FONTS and make sure
that there are 4 Arial fonts and 4 Times New Roman fonts installed. If
they are not, click on the ADD button and add both font families (from
within the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory)
* If text seems to be missing throughout the product (like the last line in
a paragraph is gone, or the title of a section goes off the edge of it's
allotted space) the problem may be the video mode. Some video cards have
special video modes called LARGE FONT, that change the way that text is
displayed in windows. For example, if you have an ATI MACH 32 video card,
don't use the LARGE FONT video modes. Click on the MACH FLEXDESK CONTROL
PANEL icon in the MACH UTILITIES group. Then click on the ADVANCED button
at the bottom, and click on SMALL FONT under the ENVIRONMENT section. The
best video mode for most Windows programs is 640 x 480 by 256 colors.
SOUND PROBLEMS
--------------
* (Sound Blaster, Ensoniq, Packard Bell Computers)
Most sound problems can be attributed to a driver issue. Do the following:
Step 1 Edit the SYSTEM.INI file (use notepad or edit in DOS) and look for
the sectrion [drivers] (use search of find)
Step 2 Look for the line that starts WAVE=<path and/or filename>.DRV
Step 3 Using the File Manager or DIR in DOS, find the <filename>.DRV
in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory or whereever the path points.
Check the date on the driver. Usually it is older than Janury 1994.
Step 4 Call or download from your sound card manufacturer the latest
driver (Creative Labs has a new one dated Mar. 1995) (Creative Labs
BBS 1-405-742-6660 8N1) You may want to call the maker of your
computer to get an updated driver.
CD-ROM
------
* If you have problems reading files from the CD-ROM or portions of the
program, check to see which CD-ROM driver is being used (ie. MSCDEX.EXE,
CORELCDX.EXE, NWCDEX.EXE, etc.) Check to see if you are using the latest
version or the version that is compatible with the version of DOS being
used. To test your driver use "c:\dos\mscdex.exe ...". Copy the
appropriate line in your autoexec.bat and place "REM " at the beginning
of the original line, then make the following change to the copy line.
The "..." represent all of the original command flags
(ie. /d:mscd001, /m:12, etc.)
Example:
REM lh C:\SCSI\CORELCDX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:12
lh C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:12
VIDEO DISPLAY
-------------
* THE THE MEGA MOVIE GUIDE v3.5 was created to
be displayed on a 640x480x256 resolution VGA+ color monitor.
The video clips will display best in a 256 color (8 bit) mode. If you
experience display problems and you have a video card capable of
displaying 256 colors, open Windows Setup, choose the Options
command, and select a 640x480, 256-color driver.
You can still view video clips on a 16 color (4 bit) 640x480
graphics display card/monitor, but the video may appear slightly
grainy due to the lower color display.
* Some graphics applications (Adobe Photoshop(TM), etc.)
may interfere with the color display of this product. If you
encounter problems, try exiting the graphics application, restart
the product, or try restarting Windows.
* If the Video Clips or Movie Stills appear too dark, try adjusting the
brightness and contrast knobs on your monitor.
* If you get odd crashes, like "MMTASK caused a General Protection Fault" or
most any other "Application Error" or "General Protection Fault", the first
place to start is your video driver. The best way to check is to use the
standard VGA driver that comes with windows. Startup the main group under
program manager, double-click on windows setup, choose options, click on
change system settings, click on display then choose VGA (not VGA 3.0). Use
the current driver and restart windows. If this test works contact your
video card manufacturer for an update driver. This problem is a common
problem with Cirrus Logic chip cards. Your video driver will show up in
windows setup as "GD 54xx ... v1.4x" or "CL 54xx ... v1.4x" where x is a
resolution or version number. The Cirrus Logic BBS number is 1-510-440-9080
and the file is about 700k
AUDIO TRACK ON VIDEO CLIPS
--------------------------
* Be sure the volume control on your sound card is turned up (both the
physical knob on the board and any software driven volume controls--see
your sound board documentation for details)
* For acceptable audio playback, an MPC compatible CD-ROM drive is required (a
CD-ROM capable of sustaining a 150K/second transfer rate and a maximum
seek time of 1 second while using no more than 40% of the CPU's
processing power.) Without a CD-ROM that maintains these rates the audio
clips may sound choppy or may not play at all.
* If you have a sound board and meet the above sound requirements but you
are still unable to hear any sound, contact your sound board manufacturer
to verify that you have the correct drivers and that there are no other
conflicts. Many problems seem to be common with older versions of Creative
labs sound blaster drivers. If your driver (c:\windows\system\sb16snd.drv)
is older than 3/95, you may want to download the last driver. Creative Labs
BBS number is 1-405-742-6660. Check your system.ini file for a line
wave=xxxxxxx.drv, then follow the path or check in the windows\system
subdirectory for the driver and check the date.
VIDEO CLIPS
-----------
* All clips in THE MEGA MOVIE GUIDE v3.5 were created using
Indeo 3.2. During installation if you did not install Video for Windows 1.1e
you will not be able to play the video clips. Earlier versions of Video for
Windows and Indeo clips can be played on the new Indeo 3.2 drivers
* Video clips appear optimally when played on a video card capable of
256 colors (see above VIDEO DISPLAY section)
* Most problems that occur when playing video clips are related to the version
of the video driver on your machine. Click the HELP button then click on
System Info to see the video driver and version. Call your video card
manufacturer to see if they have more recent drivers. (Most drivers are
updated every couple of months)
* If your video plays choppy (but the sound is fine) add a "/U" at the end
of your SMARTDRV line in the autoexec.bat. This turns caching of the CD-ROM
and smooths video playback
c:\dos\smartdrv.exe 256 /U
* If you have difficulty installing Video for Windows 1.1e, close down all
other applications that are running in the background. In the Program Manager]
pull-down the HELP menu and click on About Program Manager. Check System
Resources and Memory. System Resources should be close to 80%.
WINDOWS EMULATION PROGRAMS (Norton Desktop, PC Tools, etc.)
-----------------------------------------------------------
* THE MEGA MOVIE GUIDE v3.5 was developed for the standard
Windows Program Manager. If using you are using an add-on desktop and experience
problems installing or using this product, try disabling the desktop and rerunning
the program to see if that fixes the problem
ON-LINE HELP AND SYSTEM INFO
----------------------------
* Click on the Help button on the right side of each screen, the cursor
then changes to a arrow and question mark. Click on any button for help.
Click on System Info to monitor system usage, determine driver info, check
for a Temp directory, etc.
PRINTING
--------
* If you are having problems printing from this product, try on of the following:
1. If you are using a laser, bubblejet, inkjet, etc go into the control panel
and double-click on the printer icon. Install "HP Laserjet Series II" as
the default printer (you may need your original windows diskettes).
2. If you are using a dot matrix printer go into the control panel and
double-click on the printer icon. Install "Generic / Text Only" as the
default printer (you may need your original windows diskettes).
Both of these drivers are standard drivers useful for checking driver problems
in other manufacturer drivers. If this fixes the printing problem, call your
printer manufacturer for an update printer driver.
