Mobed Tutorial
Written by Martin Jones
The following file is a tutorial for the Mobed program which should
be on this disk.It will help you immensely if you have a printed
version which you can just leave by the side of the computer with
Mobed loaded. If you are a registered user then you can have a
printed copy by request. The tutorial is set out in steps which
are hopefully set out in a logical order. This tutorial assumes
that you have the original Mobdefault and Pdefault files in the
current directory. You cannot damage anything by experimenting (though
you can erase a mob or mobs accidently or overwrite a file) so a
healthy dose of curiosity is in order.
1. Boot up Mobed you should be able to do this by inserting the disk
at the workbench prompt or should somebody have changed the disk
(i.e. Mobed might be on another disk with other programs) then
typing Mobed at the CLI prompt will work.
2. Wait.Mobed needs to set itself up ,first it prepares memory for
itself the number will count down while this is happening. Then
Mobed will check for the Pdefault file, and load it if it is
in the directory. Then Mobed checks for Mobdefault (The screen
will flash while this is happening). You should then by presented
with some rainbow circles in the edit window and over on the right
there will be some smaller (proper size) versions.
3. Select a decent Foreground colour, click on the Forcol icon then
click in the palette area ,the screen will then re-organize
itself.
4. Select a decent Background colour by clicking on the Borcol icon
and then the colour of your choice.
5. Alter the Mobsize to 16 * 16 by pressing "z" then click on the
16 * 16 icon.Now click on the Clr+Set icon ,Mobed will clear
the memory and allocate it for your new 16 * 16 mobs.
6. Change the number of colours allowed by pressing "p",change it
to 32 colours by selecting 5 planes (it should already be on
5 planes) and then click on Clr+Set.
7. Select dot drawing mode by clicking on the Dot icon or by pressing
"d".
8. Select colour 3 as your drawing colour, click on the colour at the
top right of the palette area with the left mouse button. With
the original Pdefault this should be pure red.The colour in the
Draw box should now change to pure red.
9. Draw a squiggle by moving the pointer into the edit window, press
the left mouse button and move the pointer about in the edit
window,a series of dots will be drawn under the pointer.
10. Erase part of your squiggle by pressing the right mouse button
(after releasing it from 9.) and moving the pointer about in the
edit window,as the current erase colour is colour 0 anything under
the pointer will be erased.
11. Clear the mob (good-bye squiggle (is there a proper word
squiggle ??)) by either clicking on the Clear icon or by pressing
DEL.
12. Name the mob by clicking on the name box (just below the edit window)
or by pressing "n" ,now type in a name and press return.
13. Select colour No 4 (one below top left) this should be pure green.
14. Select box drawing mode by clicking on the line icon and then
selecting the box icon (but making sure that the filled icon is
deselected),now click on the OK icon.Alternatively you can just
press "b".
15. Draw a frame in the mob by moving the pointer upto the top left
of the edit window and clicking with the left button. Now move down to
the bottom right of the edit window and click with the left mouse
button (pressing the right mouse button will abort the operation).
A box should now appear in the edit window.
16. Select filled box by clicking on the line icon then selecting the
filled icon and then clicking on the OK icon.Or just press "f".
17. Select colour 5 (should be pure blue).
18. Draw a filled box in the same way as the normal box (two clicks
in the edit window).
19. Select a different colour (I bet you want to pick one of the
rainbow colours....well,go on then).
20. Select circle by clicking on the Circle icon or press "c".
21. Draw a circle by clicking once in the middle of the edit window
and then click elsewhere in the window (not too close to where
you last clicked).
22. Advance one mob by pressing "=",the + sign is just above = so there
is some logic in the choice.
23. Copy mob 0 by clicking on the Copy icon or by pressing "k" (Kopy)
then type 00 and press enter or return. You can just press enter
on return on their own with nothing else in the IB to signify
00.Mob 0 should now be copied to mob 1 (you are currently at
mob 1).
24. Increase the magnification by clicking on the mag+ icon or by
pressing backspace. The edit window's image should now be twice
as big.
25. Select Dot
26. Draw a squiggle (Chambers 20th Century said that it exists so I
shall carry on using squiggle).Notice now that your dots in the
edit window are a lot larger.
27. Move the edit window about a bit by pressing the down arrow a
couple of times and then press "6" on the numeric keypad. The cursor
keys move the edit window by one pixel and the arrows on the
numeric keypad move the window by four pixels.
28. Reduce the magnification by pressing backslash or by clicking on the
mag- icon. You cannot reduce the magnification any further becuase you
are working on a 16 * 16 mob.
29. Animate display mob 2 by clicking on the Ani2 icon or by pressing F2
This will bring up the animation box for display mob 2.
30. Set the start of the animation to mob 0 by clicking in the Strt IB and
then typing 00 and pressing return.
31. Set the end of the animation to mob 1 by clicking in the Fin IB and
then typing 01 and pressing return. This sets the animation to flick
between two frames,mob 0 and mob 1.
32. Set the speed of the animation to $30 by clicking in the Spd IB and
then typing 30 and pressing return.
33. Start the animation by clicking on the Start icon which is up the top
of the box.Display mob 2 should now be flicking between mob 0 and mob 1
which gives the image that the latest squiggle flashes on and off.
34. Position display mob 3 by clicking on the Pos3 icon or press F6.Now
move the mob about using the mouse and then fine tune the position
with the cursor keys.Click the left mouse button or press return
to set the mob in that position.
35. Goto mob 2 by clicking on the Goto icon or press "g" and now type 02
in the IB and press return.
36. Draw something a squiggle in a box or something in different colours.
37. X-flip the mob by clicking on the X-flip icon or press "x".
38. Y-flip the mob ,"y" from the keyboard.
39. Rotate the mob through 90 degrees by clicking on the Rotate icon or
press "r".Now click on the 5a icon.
40. Return the mob to it's correct orientation by rotating it through -90
degrees (270 degress). You want the -5a icon in the rotate box.
41. Rotate the mob through 16 degrees by clicking on the degree IB in the
rotate box.Now type in 10 and press return. If you want to use a
negative number then just subtract your degrees from 360 and this
will do the job.
42. Scroll the mob about by clicking on the arrows underneath the palette
area.Just click them about.
43. This is the bit I like,select colour 8 (purple I think)
44. Edit the cycle-list by clicking on the draw (or erase if you clicked
on colour 8 with the right mouse button) box and you should get a big
table full of values over to the left of the screen. The cursor should
now be at the top left of the list,RGB value 0.Type in 0f0 the cursor
should now have moved one line down and the purple colour changed to
green.Now type 0e0,then 0d0,0c0,0b0,0a0,090,080 ... all the way down
to 000.The cursor should now be on the next line to the right, now go
the other way by typing 000,010... upto 0f0.This typing should have
completed two vertical lines. Now press return, you have completed the
cycle-list for colour 8 (though it is only half full).
45. Adjust the cycling information by clicking on the Cycle icon or by
pressing "s" (sycle).

the Adjust icon.Notice how all the colours start again when you click
on the Adjust icon.

51. Save your new palette by pressing "t" and then typing in a suitable
name (should you want Mobed to load it automatically then save it
as Pdefault).
52. Save your mobs by clicking on the Save icon or by pressing "S",now
click on the bottom box and enter in your filename.
53. Make sure that MOB is selected and then click on Save.Type in 2
when Mobed wants to know how many mobs to save.Your experimental
mobs will now be saved.
54. Exit Mobed by pressing left ALT , left Amiga , right Amiga ,
right ALT.
That completes the tutorial I hope you could understand it and were
able to follow it.Now the rest is up to you,if you have anything
truly amazing and you want to show it to me then you know the
address.
May the creative sessions be long, frequent and productive.
