MELODY MASTER Page 1
INTRODUCTION
Melody Master is a music system for writing, editing and
playing one-voice music tunes. Melody Master uses graphics
interface which lets you see and edit the music in sheet
form. Melody Master is very useful in many ways. You can use
it just to listen to and play around with some of included
tunes. It will also help you teach yourself (or your
children) the beginnings of "music grammar". At last, if you
are a programmers or a person who just likes to write Batch
Files, this is a great tool for making you own programs
"sing". Whatever way you are going to use it, I am sure you
will have a lot of fun!
Melody Master support 5 note-lengths, 5 rests, around 7
octaves, repeats, sharps, flats, dotted notes, and 6 tempos.
The melodies can be saved in special *.MEL files. Melodies
can also be transferred into different forms of output files
such as BASIC programs, Pascal procedures, C functions, ANSI
Music, etc. This package also contain utility "CONVERT"
which let you convert BASIC's play-like strings of music
into Melody Master *.MEL files. This makes Melody Master
compatible with many other music systems. This version also
contain Configuration Utility which let you set you own
colors, tempos, note-lengths etc.
REQUIREMENTS
Melody Master requires an IBM PC XT, PS/2, AT, or Clone with
Hercules, CGA, MCGA, EGA, VGA, AT&T 6300, or 3270 Graphics
adapters, and it will work with a Monochrome (Two Color) or
Color monitor and, of course, an internal speaker.
GETTING STARTED
Type START at your command prompt. You will see a menu of
activities. Choose 1 to run Melody Master or 2 to run Melody
Master on CGA or MCGA graphics cards.
MELODY MASTER Page 2
MUSIC NOTATION
After starting the program you will see the special graph
used to write music, with a circle in the middle of the
center line, and a large S-like figure on the left side.
This is the position called B. If a note is placed on, or
between a line, it has an alphabetic letter reference, as
would a note have if we put it here on this center line. The
5 lines, from top to bottom, are referred to as F,D,B,G, and
E. So, if you put a letter on the fourth line from the top,
it would be called a G. Notes placed in the 4 spaces between
the lines are known as E, C, A, and F. Notice that if you
put a note on the top line, then the space between it and
the next line, and so on, you would have the following notes
E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E, and F. This is the way they are
referred to in normal music notation, or the way it would
look if you were looking at a piece of sheet music.
WRITING AND EDITING MUSIC
To place a note, move the large circle to the line or space
that you want and press 1 for a whole note, 2 for a
half-note, 3 for a quarter-note, 4 for an eighth-note, or 5
for a sixteenth-note. If you wish to have a dotted note,
hold down the ALT key and press the number as indicated
above (1-5). To add a rest, just hold down the SHIFT key and
press 1-5 depending on the duration of the rest you want.
After you place your note or rest, the cursor will
automatically move you to the next position so you can add
another note or rest. Maximum number of notes is 800.
To edit your notes, just use the Right and Left arrow keys
to move the arrows at the top to the note you want to
change. Then move the arrow on the right with the Up and
Down arrow keys to the right height of the note. Enter the
note that you want there. If the INSERT mode is off it will
replace the note that was there. Otherwise, the whole note
text will move one position to the right and the note will
be inserted. To delete a note, put the arrow at the top of
the chart one note to the right of the one you want to
delete, and then press the BACKSPACE key to delete the note.
If you feel 2 octaves isn't enough, you can use
Ctrl-PgUp/Ctrl-PgDn keys. By pressing Ctrl-PgUp you will be
8 notes higher. In this mode when you enter a note, it will
have a line at the top. You can Ctrl-PgUp again to get
higher or Ctrl-PgDn to get lower. You can see your current
octave status at the upper right hand corner.

-----------
Select one of 6 tempos. Allegro is the Default. Use the
configuration utility to make your own tempos.
MELODY MASTER Page 4
F7 - Output files.
------------------
If you are not really good in this computer stuff, you may
just skip this section. This operation is used to generate
an output ASCII file. This file may contain commands or data
for a specific application.
After pressing F7, the computer will ask you the type of
output file you want to create (Pascal 1, Pascal 2, C, C
array, Turbo C, BASIC, data file, SPKR.SYS, ANSI, Standard).
Melody Master will write the file on disk in the chosen
type. The file will have the name of internal file plus the
right extension: .pas, .bas, .c, .spk, .dat, .ans, or .asc.
In the case of data files, the procedure is a little bit
different (see Data File).
Notes for different types of output files:
PASCAL 1.......
Compilers which have functions: SOUND, DELAY and NOSOUND can
be used (for example Turbo Pascal). Output file is a
procedure which can be included into your program using a
screen editor or directive {$INCLUDE filename}.
PASCAL 2....... (New!)
Output is a text file containing a constant 2-D array of
frequencies and durations. This file should be included in
"CONST" section of your program (you will have to move
statement "MAX = {n}" and place it BEFORE the array). Use
PlayArray procedure (file PLARRAY.PAS) to play the music.
This method is probably the most compact one in terms of the
size of generated code.
C..............
Output file is a C function which can be called from your
program. Function tone() (file TONE.C) is used for making
sounds (you may have to make some adjustments in tone() for
the speed of your PC)
C array........ (New!)
Output is a text file containing a global 2-D array of
frequencies and durations. Use playarray() function (file
PLARRAY.C) to play the music. This method is probably the
most compact one in terms of the size of generated code.
Turbo C........
Output file is Turbo C function which use sound(), delay()
and nosound() functions for making sounds.
BASIC.......... (Renew!)
The output is ASCII BASIC file which contain a number of
PLAY functions (with line numbers!). You might want to
change tempo and some other initial sittings.
MELODY MASTER Page 5
Data File......
If the type of the output file is Data File, the program
will ask if you want to create a "new file" of to extend an
existed one. A Melody Master Data file is a text file. Each
of its lines is one melody. This is the line format:
[MelodyName] [frequency of 1st note] [duration of 1st note]
[frequency of 2nd note] [duration of 2nd note] ... [CR]
[MelodyName] [frequency of 1st note] [duration of 1st note]
[frequency of 2nd note] [duration of 2nd note] ... [CR]
...
If you work in Pascal or C, you can use already written
procedure PLAY which work with Melody Master data files
(PLAY.PAS or PLAY.C). You can also use command PLAY.EXE to
do the same thing from batch files or other programs.
SPKR.SYS....... (New!)
The output is an ASCII file which can be used with SPKR.SYS
software. SPRK.SYS is an installable device which let you
play music in the background (while program is working on
something else). The author, Mr. C. J. Dunford, kindly
allowed me to include his program into my software package.
Refer to SPKR.DOC for more information. SPKR.SYS can play no
more than 128 note per file, so if your melody is more than
128 notes long, Melody Master will split it into several
files with extensions .spk, .sp2, sp3, sp4 etc. You can use
SPKR.SYS in any application or language (even FORTRAN!).
ANSI........... (New!)
This option will give you an output in ANSI Music format.
The format is as shown:
ESC[M ...music codes string... ^N
If you are a SYSOP you can make "the first singing BBS!".
STANDARD....... (New!)
Using this option you get a file of BASIC's PLAY command
strings. This makes Melody Master compatible with many other
music systems such as VMUSIC. (Use CONVERT utility to do the
opposite operation).
CUSTOMIZING
For registered users only! I might customize the output
files for a small additional payment or even for free, if
your idea sounds interesting.
F8 - Play a melody backwards.
------------------------------
This command plays the entire melody backwards (just for fun!).
F9 - Delete a melody from the memory.
-------------------------------------
This command deletes everything from memory so you can start
to write a new melody.
F10 - Play current page.
------------------------
The command plays the current page of music on the screen.
MELODY MASTER Page 6
MUSIC LIBRARY (*.MEL)
Most the music in the library I entered without using music
scores but by ear. So there might be some difference between
my interpretation and the real thing, sorry. Feel free to
include these melodies into your commercial programs as long
as you are a registered user.
If you wrote or entered a nice music piece you want to share
with others you can include it in later versions of Melody
Master by contacting me. I will really appreciate it!
CONFIGURATION UTILITY
Melody Master 1.6 has its own configuration utility
(MMCONFIG.EXE) and configuration file (MMCONFIG.PAR). Run
MMCONFIG.EXE from the DOS prompt or from START.BAT. If your
copy of Melody Master doesn't have this file or somehow you
can't run it on your PC, you can edit MMCONFIG.PAR by
yourself, see CONFIGURATION FILE.
After you have started the Utility a main menu will appear
on the screen. Use the Up/Down arrow keys to highlight
different options. Use the ENTER key to choose an option.
Select "Set Own Colors" to choose screen foreground and
background colors for Melody Master. If the colors you have
chosen are out-of-range of your monitor, you will not get
any notification but Melody Master will use 0 (Black) for
the foreground and 1 (Blue) for the background.
Select "Set Own Tempos" to add new tempos or change the old
ones. In the Tempo Window you will see name of a particular
tempo, equal sign and a number. The number is a ratio which
is multiplied by the note-length to get the current tempo.
To change a tempo, press ENTER on the one you want to
change. To add a tempo, press ENTER on the next available
"Not Used". Maximum of 16 tempos is allowed.
Select "Set Own Lengths" to modify the note-lengths. The
lengths are given in milliseconds. Press ENTER to change a
note-length.
Select "Help On/Off" to choose between immediate and
optional help. If you set the immediate help, the help
window will appear when you start Melody Master while
optional help will activate the help window only when you
press F1. The default is immediate. When you have learned
the basic Melody Master commands you might want to set it to
optional (on slow PCs, help takes a noticeable amount of
time).
Select "Save & Exit" to quit the program and save changes in
MMCONFIG.PAR. If this file didn't exist the program will
create it.
MELODY MASTER Page 7
CONFIGURATION FILE
Configuration file is an ASCII file called MMCONFIG.PAR
which contain information about settings for Melody Master.
There is another configuration file STANDARD.PAR which
contain the initial sittings. If you have accidentally done
something wrong, use RENEW.BAT to copy STANDARD.PAR in place
of MMCONFIG.PAR.
The following information is for those of you who couldn't
get the Configuration Utility to work or just don't have it.
MMCONFIG.PAR is an ASCII file. This means you can edit
it using any word processor which can work with ASCII files
(EDLIN, for example). The structure of the config file is
as follows:
------------- MMCONFIG.PAR ----------------------
[Foreground Color number] [Background Color number]
[Help on/off code]
[Full-length] [half] [forth] [eighth] [sixteenth]
[Number of Tempos]
[Tempo Name]
[Tempo Ratio]
[Temp Name]
[Temp Ratio]
...
-------------------------------------------------
Foreground and background colors are numbers as followed:
Black - 0 ... White - 15
Immediate help is corresponded with number 1, optional help
with number 2.

IDEAS FOR FUTURE
The whole future of Melody Master is depending on you! Your
support and comments are my main sources! Shall Melody
Master be a programmer's tool, educational game, or
something else? It's up to YOU! Here are some ideas I came
up with. Let me know if they are good.
o Add some more features of the real editor: mark, copy,
paste, etc.
o Allow placing of sharps and flats at the beginning. Global
change of octave. Maybe even global change of key!
o Global and local legato / staccato.
o More music files. I depend on you folks! My music is
mostly classics - nobody likes it anymore! (very pity!)
o Print the sheet music on printer. This one is also fully
depends on you! I can't yet afford to buy the printing
software yet.
o THIS ONE IS FOR YOU TO FEEL OUT!!!
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

ABOUT MYSELF
I was born in Leningrad, U.S.S.R. I started my career as a
programmer at the age of 7 when my dad taught me how to use
Soviet programming calculator B3-34. It did only about 1/2
operation a second (if it was in a good mood!). Then I
switched to the first Soviet PC called BK-0010. It was on
the same level with Commodore but used very old and stupid
language called FOCAL. I have written a number of programs
in FOCAL including LOGO interpreter.
In 1989 my whole life has changed because I and my family
moved to the U.S. Now I am in high school and I am going to
be a computer scientist.
Melody Master was one of my first and yet largest program on
this type of computer. I started in May of 1989. The job
didn't go fast because I worked only on weekends. The first
release (v1.5) was in August of 1990.
I like three things: eating ice cream, programming, and
playing the piano.

you. :->
MELODY MASTER Page 12
For "REGISTRATION AND DISK" you get all above PLUS the following:
Latest Version of the Program on Disk
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Floppy disk with the latest registered version of Melody Master
will be provided with "REGISTRATION AND DISK" option. The
Screen. It will also contain the latest and the best melodies.
Printed Manual
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You will also get a printed manual with the program disk. Note
that my English is becoming better with every new version of the
program. So there is a good chance that someday I will write
understandable documentation! :->
For "MELODY MASTER SOURCE CODE" you get:
Program Source Code
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes! With this registration option you will get more than 70K of
source code in Turbo PASCAL. To be honest with you, most of it
is a good "spaghetti meal"! I myself lost a hope to understand
some of its "dark corners" (That's what you get for not writing
comments)! However, the procedures for output files are
structured and more understandable so it's still a good deal!
