  1.          Type-1 Tools--A PostScript Binary Font Utility for IBM-PCs
  2.          ----------------------------------------------------------

  4.      Type-1 Tools is terrific utility for controlling Type-1
  5.      PostScript fonts.  As most IBM desktop publishers know,
  6.      Type-1 binary fonts present a difficult challenge in the IBM
  7.      environment:
  8.  
  9.      1.  Since they contain PostScript End-of-File characters,
  10.          they cannot simply be copied to the printer like Type-3
  11.          fonts or other PostScript files.  (Even if they could,
  12.          Type-1 fonts are designed to be interpreted by the
  13.          sending program, and contain data unusable directly by a
  14.          PostScript printer.)

  16.      2.  Font downloaders have traditionally been designed to
  17.          access the serial port, even though many IBM desktop
  18.          publisher prefer to use the faster parallel port.
  19.  
  20.      3.  Many IBM programs which can use Type-1 fonts can only
  21.          read IBM versions of these fonts.  Macintosh Type-1
  22.          fonts, such as the shareware and public domain fonts
  23.          available on services such as CompuServe and Genie, are
  24.          unusable to IBM desktop publishers.

  27.       Type-1 Tools solves all of those problems, and more.  It
  28.       offers the following features:
  29.  
  30.       - Macintosh conversion--it translates Macintosh Type-1
  31.         fonts into IBM Type-1 fonts.  This has been successfully
  32.         tested with many of the Macintosh Type-1 fonts currently
  33.         on Compuserve.
  34.  
  35.       - ASCII conversion--it translates either Macintosh or IBM
  36.         Type-1 BINARY fonts into IBM Type-1 ASCII fonts.  In
  37.         these fonts, all of the binary encryption is converted to
  38.         hex numbers which can be immediately interpreted by
  39.         PostScript printers.  Therefore, you can simply use the
  40.         DOS COPY command to send these fonts to your printer, or
  41.         you can send them over a network.  During this
  42.         translation, you have the option of inserting the
  43.         PostScript command which will make the font resident.

  45.       - Font download--You can download either IBM or Macintosh
  46.         Type-1 binary fonts, IBM Type-1 ASCII fonts, or Type-3
  47.         fonts to a printer through either COM 1 or 2,  or LPT 1
  48.         or 2.  Downloaded fonts remain resident.

  50.       - Printer directory--To ensure your fonts have been
  51.         downloaded correctly, you can print a listing of all
  52.         resident fonts.  This gives you "communication" with your
  53.         printer, even though you are using a parallel port.

  56.       In addition, Type-1 Tools offers other useful features:

  58.       - Type-1 Tools features an attractive, helpful user
  59.         interface with highlight bar menus and point-and-shoot
  60.         directory listings.
  61.  
  62.       - Directories identify whether Type-1 fonts are IBM or MAC.
  63.  
  64.       - Binary to hex conversions are performed in assembly
  65.         language subroutines, greatly speeding the conversion
  66.         process.

  68.       - Printer defaults are saved in a configuration file, which
  69.         may be stored anywhere on the hard drive.

  71.       - Option for declaring default font directory on startup.

  74. In all honesty...

  77. Type-1 Tools lives up to its claims and does it very well.  But
  78. there are some things you can't expect it to do:  It won't create
  79. font metrics files.  If you obtain an .AFM file along with your
  80. font, you can use that file to install your font in a number of
  81. IBM applications.  However, at this time I don't know of any way
  82. to convert an .AFM file to a Windows font metrics (.PFM) file,
  83. nor do I know how to create an .AFM file from the PostScript font
  84. itself.

  86. Also, Corel Draw's WFNBOSS is not compatible with all Type-1
  87. fonts.  It translates some Type-1s incorrectly, including those
  88. created by Type-1 Tools.  As more font tools come onto the
  89. market, I believe more robust readers will be available to us.
  90. In the meantime, you can fully use your fonts in any application
  91. capable of downloading PostScript fonts to a PostScript device.

  97. Normally, I believe in and support the shareware marketing
  98. concept.  But there are times when shareware is not a very good
  99. way to sell software.  One of those times is now--when a target
  100. market for a software product is relatively small (serious IBM
  101. PostScript users).  But although I cannot upload this utility to
  102. on-line services, I can make it very inexpensive.
