THE 2002 MINIGAME COMPO
Introduction by Dave Moorman
Here in Colorado, truckers say
that anyone can drive a loaded 18-
wheeler UP a mountain. It might be in
second gear and take awhile, but the
truck [will] reach the top of the
pass. It is coming down that can turn
your eyes glassy, knuckles white, hair
gray, and pants brown! Inertia and
gravity must be respected.
Likewise, a knowledgable
programmer can write a stunning,
feature packed program in 25 or 30
Kilobytes (unless it is for Windows,
in which case, we are looking at
Megabytes). What will certainly turn
eyes glassy, knuckles white, etc, etc,
is creating a game in a mere 1024
bytes. Four pages of memory. One
Kilobyte.
Here are the entries of the 2002
1K MiniGame Compo (Competition in
Euro-Speak). The 19 coders hail from
around the world. The games range from
remakes of famous and infamous
challenges of yore to a few new ideas.
Playability varies -- and that is a
big part of the competition.
Alas, none return to LOADSTAR.
Some require that the computer be
reset to exit. But that does not
diminish the fun.
I checked these out on VICE in PAL
mode, and on my real C-64 (NTSC).
Those that don't work right on NTSC
are grouped under PAL MiniGames. Your
mileage may differ!
Dig in! See what the "Elite" and
not so "Elite" coders of the world are
doing when they have a little time and
very little space!
