PERSUASION
by Lance C. Thomas
[DAVE'S PRERAMBLE]: PERSUASION was a
game I found on an old Compute!
Gazette disk. It is about armies
(Blue and Gray) "persuading" counties
to support them during the American
Civil War. Step into a county once,
and it becomes "ready." Step in again,
and half the people support you. Step
in a third time, and the county is
yours (and your opponent cannot
convert them). But step in yet again,
and they get all huffy about you being
pushy -- and revert back to "ready."
I published the two-player game hoping
Lance would add some artificial
smarts. And at last, he did! So read
on! The text below (and your computer
opponent) can be very Persuasive!
NAVIGATION
----------
The pointer can be moved by a
mouse in port 1, or a joystick in
port 2, or the keyboard cursor keys.
For the joystick, the FIRE button
and [F7] are used as the left and
right mouse buttons, respectively.
For the keyboard, [SPACE] and
[RETURN] can be used as the left mouse
button, and [F7] as the right mouse
button.
The left mouse button is used to
make a selection. A selection can also
be made with an indicated [KEY]. While
the program is "busy", the arrow
pointer will be yellow. The program
will not process mouse clicks or key
presses while the arrow is yellow. So
if you want to select something while
the arrow is yellow; press a key and
wait, or hold a mouse button down and
wait.
Note, [STOP] has been disabled.
There are two player buttons;
[B]lue and [G]ray. Use these buttons
to toggle the player between human and
computer. To toggle both, use the
right mouse button.
There are two command buttons;
[P]lay and [Q]uit. Play starts a new
game using the current options. [Q]UIT
quits PERSUASION, and returns you to
LOADSTAR or BASIC.
CREDITS
-------
To create this program, I used the
following tools: SYSRES(tm) by Don
Lekei from Hands-on Software Inc.;
ZIP64 by Tim George; FONT STUDIO by
Anthony Rose; MR. EDSTAR by Dave
Moorman; STAR LINKER 1.2 and STAR
PACKER 1.2 by Lee Novak; and
FONTSWAPPER V2 from LOADSTAR.
This program incorporates the
following tools: MR. MOUSE 2.1 and
MOUSE MATE by Lee Novak.
COMMENTARY
----------
Repetition allows either player to
prevent a win or tie. So when
repetition occurs, call it a draw or
try something else, the computer can
outlast you.
The blue player has a slight
advantage. So for a more difficult
game, be the gray player.
It is possible to beat either
computer player. Watch how the
computer plays, and go ahead and take
advantage of it. In addition to the
hardwired patterns, the computer has
the ability to add patterns by trial
and error.
The file, "persuasion2x.lst" is
able to hold 1658 patterns. At present
it has about a 100 that the computer
developed while I was testing it. The
file automatically loads when you
start the program. The file will be
updated when you quit the program,
provided it is present.
