THE WRITE STUFF 64 and 128 were programmed by Eric Lee
THE ILLUSTRATOR II adjunct was programmed by Hugh McMenamin
A few months ago, without accolades or fanfares, ILLUSTRATOR II was
softly ushered into Busy Bee Software's library of add-on programs. What
Hugh McMemamin's series of ILLUSTRATOR programs do is allow you to easily
integrate graphics into THE WRITE STUFF word processor pages.
ILLUSTRATOR I was widely accepted by the Commodore-using audience,
however, it soon took its place on the shelf to gather dust. Why? Because
RUNPAINT graphics were difficult to prepare and PRINT SHOP graphics lacked
the necessary detail to add substance to a page. The small PS graphics
looked quite amateurish. Difficult to use, failure of RUNPAINT screens to
mate properly, and the occasional loss of some data relegated the
ILLUSTRATOR I to the back of the disk drawer. This has all changed with
the advent of ILLUSTRATOR II - The Next Generation.
The new version uses "Clip-Art" graphics and works 100% better than the
previous one did. Some Clip Art is furnished with the program, and several
other disks full of prepared graphics are available through The FGM
Connection. If you have the pay version of the FunGraphics Machine, you
already know that you can capture Clip-Art screens from any graphics that
will display on your screen. It is also possible to capture two or three
screens linked across for exceptional detail. Printing is fast, placement
is precise, and density changes can be made with a utility included with
the disk. Printers supported include the Star and Epson compatibles, the
LEGEND, Siekosha, and even Commodore 1525 compatibles.
"PRINT DENS CHANG" is the utility that converts your Clip-Art into the
density your printer prints best. Normally, a screen has the proper aspect
ratio to print at an 80 dots-per-inch density. Had you wished to link
three screens across a page, the first two screens would fill all the
available space. By changing the density to 120 dpi, you could print all
three screens on an 8" page width. Commodore compatibles that only print
at 60 dpi will only print 1-1/2 screens across. By changing the density of
a single screen to 60 dpi, the single screen would cover the entire page
width. This utility will convert any Clip-Art screen into any density your
printer is capable of printing! As a word of caution, use this utility in
the C-64 mode only and disable your fast load cartridge if it interferes!
The time of conversion is dependent upon the size of the graphics. Don't
let the conversion time on the screen scare you; it's missing a decimal
point and the true time is only 1/10th the time indicated.
It works similarly to ILLUSTRATOR I and so certain rules MUST be
followed:
(1) The printer's secondary address must indicate the printer's graphic
mode, (usually a "4" or "5");
(2) The TWS printer instructions must be set to "ASCII" unless otherwise
noted;
(3) There must be at least one line or space prior to the graphic name;
(4) The left margin must be set above "0". The <CTRL> <2> <mo> command,
which is normally used by the SAM talker module, can be defined as a macro
to keep code typing to a minimum. When followed by a <+> or a <-> the
printer will know if you want to back-feed or not. Some printers can feed
the paper backwards while others require the user to do it manually. Both
printer types are supported.
Complete and well-written instructions are included. So are several
DEMO letters to make sure your printer is working properly, as well as
several Clip-Art graphics for your own use. The ILLUSTRATOR II is highly
recommended for anyone who is a regular user of THE WRITE STUFF! If you
have TWS 64 or TWS 128 and also the pay version of the FunGraphics Machine,
ILLUSTRATOR II is a MUST! For additional information on any of the
programs listed above, please contact the official distributors listed

FENDER'S POSTMUMBLE: It's doubtful that anyone will ever create a better
word processor for the C-128 than THE WRITE STUFF. Equally doubtful is
anyone coming up with a more powerful graphics manipulator than The
FunGraphics Machine. It's not just because the market is narrow; it's
because these products are that good! I'll take TWS over WordPerfect for
the IBM ($100) anytime.
If you have TWS Version 1, it will cost you $10 (plus $3.50 S&H) for THE
ILLUSTRATOR II, which is essentially the complete TWS V2 with the graphics
capability added. If you have TWS V2, the charge is $5 (plus $3.50 S&H).
Overseas S&H is $5. You must supply your serial number from the label of
the TWS disk.
The FGM regularly sells for $24.95 (plus $3.50 for S&H). There are two
Clip Art collections available -- Volume 1 (two disks) is $8 and Volume 2
(one disk) is $5.
Both of these fine products are supported by many users' groups and can be
bought at discount prices through them. Check with your group.
