" The Belfry of St Isosceles
The belfry is a pentagonal room with a
bell in each corner numbered 1 - 5 in
order. On the wall is this chart:
" {CBM-A}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{CBM-S}
" {SHIFT--} M A T I N S {SHIFT--}
" {SHIFT--} Start with the bell of {SHIFT--}
" {SHIFT--} St Pentomino {SHIFT--}
" {CBM-Z}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{SHIFT-*}{CBM-X}

"Calhoon was inspired by <The Nine Tailors>, a Lord Peter Wimsey mystery
"by Dorothy Sayers, whose plot revolved around campanology, the art of
bell-ringing. This <art> involved ringing loud church bells for hours
"on end. In the fourth grade, Calhoon himself used to ring the
"<Angelus>, which consisted of three sets of three peals followed by 33
dings. I doubt if the townspeople appreciated campanology any more in
Calhoon's day than in Wimsey's.
"
The sign implies that you are to start with bell number 5 when you ring
"the Matins. Ring the bell and enter <53142> or <52413>, the only
sequences that start with 5 and do not have adjacent bells ringing
consecutively.
"
When you return to the Belfry after viewing the church from the Library
you'll notice that someone has been cutting on the bellropes. There's
nothing you can do about this until you hear four confessions and find
a knife. Then you can cut a bellrope for tying to the well so you can
enter the lowest opening -- the entrance to the Catacomb of St Faustus.
