In the center of the Courtyard is a
"stone well, done in art deco-decadent.
"There are doors to the north, east,
"south and west with signs above saying,
"<OTTER>, <TOAD>, <GIRAFFE> and <PIG>,
respectively. Each door is fastened
with a holy lock.
*
To move around the Library fill the bucket and read that you <pray> the
name of the room. You can also move into a room by just typing the
first two letters of the room.
"
Each of the four <lobes> of the Library is similar to the others. The
first room you enter has the light switches. To light the Library you
have to <up sw> in the rooms that add up to the number in the textbook
in Father Murphy's crib. All the other switches must be down.
"The next room, once lit, has a scroll by St Anagramas. Obviously you
need to anagram the name of the scroll to find the correct name. When
you <lo sc> you can choose one and enter its name. Now it becomes a
scroll-key and will open the door in the similar room across the
Library.
"
In one of the next rooms you may find a cruet of water or wine. If you
"collect both water and wine and find a note, you can dip the note in
"them and read what it says. There's also a pornscroll, a missal
"(which must be read outside the room it's found in), a summons from
"Rome (which must be read before taken), a torn page, grey candles
"(which may be more than they seem), a black book, and last but not
"least, the Papal Bull of 303 AD.
"
To find the Bull you have to hold your breath in a room full of
"intoxicating smoke. Calhoon cannot take credit for this plot device;
"Eco used it in <The Name of the Rose>, where it turned out to be
hashish smoke. Must have been some powerful stuff.
"
"If you check out the rugs, which were made by St Caliban, the monk who
"devised the two Riddles that keep you from the final four rooms,
"you'll find that two of them are different. These two rooms, the RAM
"and the COW, hold the two Riddles, but they must be entered via certain
"doors. The RAM must be entered from the BEAR, and the COW must be
entered from the DEER. The clues to this are in the Latin signs.
"
Once you solve the two Riddles you find the four victims of either
Cardinal Musial or Dr Dee. After the fourth one has whispered his
"confession to you, you'll find a knife under the body. Now you can
"get a bellrope from the belfry, tie it to the well-beam, and go
through the priest hole in the well.
