" The Surete's Official Info Sheet
" Victim: Abbot Costello
"
" At 8:03 am October 31, 1963 a monk
reported to the police that he had dis-
covered the body of Abbot Costello on
the floor of the south confessional of
the church. The lab says he died of a
synthetic strain of plague so all
residents of the abbey have been
evacuated to St Dismal's.
&
" Six people are missing and since the
villagers didn't see anyone leave the
"abbey, it is assumed they are still
inside. No one seems to know how to get
into the Library so it hasn't been
"searched. Matins, a bell and prayer
"ritual usually rung at dawn, was
mysteriously heard around midnight
last night.
&
" The Missing and/or Deceased

" The head monk, in charge of monks
" and novices.
MOTHER PULEEZE

" in charge of the nuns.
NOVICE SCOTIA
" Fledgling monk, reputed to be a
" practical joker.
&
SISTER DEBBIE
" Young nun, said to have several
" un-nunlike tendencies.
CARDINAL MUSIAL
" Visiting consul from Rome, arrived
" October 29.
ABBOT COSTELLO (Requiescat In Pace)
" The saintly figurehead of the Abbey.
DOCTOR DEE
" The village physician, last seen
" entering the Abbey October 29.

This <frames> the mys-adventure and tells you that you will not have to
leave the Abbey to solve the murder. It also implies that you will
only have to deal with six people.
When you find out that ringing Matins opens the way to the Library the
clue that it was rung at midnight takes on more meaning.
"Calhoon was especially proud of the name, <St Dismal's>. <Dismal> is
the name of the Brants' dog in the Rick Brant juvenile adventure series
"by John Blaine, and it just seemed perfect for a saint's name. He was
able to pay a tribute and provide an apt pun with one word.
