It is not reliable for women with irregular menstrual cycles. Before using this method a woman must keep records of her cycle for six months. The period of ovulation, when a mature egg is released from an ovary, is calculated from the beginning of each menstrual cycle, with day one being the first day of bleeding. The fertile phase is usually four days before and after day 14.
