Together these hormones control the menstrual cycle. Increasing estrogen levels in the first phase of the menstrual cycle produce significant changes in the cervical mucus, which can be used as an indication of the fertile phase. The two female sex hormones are responsible for the development of secondary sex characteristics, including rounding of the breasts and the growth of pubic hair.
