The body also develops the physical characteristics of its gender at this time. Puberty usually extends between the ages of approximately 10 and 15 in both sexes. The changes occurring in puberty are initiated by hormones produced by the pituitary gland. These, in turn, trigger the sex organs (testes or ovaries) to produce increased amounts of sex hormones.
