- How To Use The ArtWorks Viewer
- ==============================
-
- Double-click on the !AWViewer icon in a directory viewer to run the program.
-
- An icon will appear on the icon bar and a default picture will be displayed.
- Click on the Close icon on the window to remove it.
-
- To view any ArtWorks file, drag it from a directory viewer onto the icon on
- the icon bar. A window will appear displaying as much of the ArtWorks file
- as will fit in the window.
-
- Where to put the ArtWorks Viewer application
- ============================================
-
- As well as being a viewer program, !AWViewer is also the store for the
- modules that other programs need to render ArtWorks files, rather like
- !System. Because of this, it should be placed in the root level of your hard
- disc, so that it can set certain system variables which tell other
- applications where to find the modules. If it is not placed in the root, you
- should make sure that you run the application's !Boot file in your own boot
- sequence. For example, if the program lives down
- adfs::HardDisc4.$.Progs.Graphics you should include the line
-
- Run adfs::HardDisc4.$.Progs.Graphics.!AWViewer.!Boot
-
- in your boot sequence. If you do not do either of the above things, programs
- which can display ArtWorks files may be unable to.
-
- Zooming into the picture
- ========================
-
- Clicking with the left hand button will zoom into the picture (i.e. increase
- its size). Clicking with the right hand button will zoom out of the picture.
-
- Clicking and dragging with the left hand button will create a box. Releasing
- the mouse button will cause the viewer to zoom into the box.
-
- Clicking with the left hand button while holding down the CTRL key will zoom
- the picture to 100%
-
- Clicking with the right hand button will zoom out of the picture.
-
- Clicking with the left hand button while holding down SHIFT will return to
- the previous scale factor (i.e. the one before the last zoom).
-
- Moving the picture around
- =========================
-
- Holding down either Alt key will change the pointer to a hand. Clicking and
- holding down the mouse will move the picture around in the window (if the
- window is only displaying part of the image).
-
- The Menu
- ========
-
- Clicking the middle button over the icon or the window will bring up the
- menu.
-
- Info shows info about the program.
-
- Quit quits the program.
-
- WYSIWYG sets the quality of the display:
-
- * 'Outlines' displays only black outlines of objects.
- * 'Simple' displays only flat fills, not graduated fills, and all lines are thin
- * 'Normal' displays graduated fills and thick lines, but does not anti-alias
- * 'Anti-aliased' will display all objects 'anti-aliased', which reduces the
- jagged edges of shapes by using grey shades or shades of colour to smooth the
- edges, in a similar way to the way fonts are anti-aliased. Anti-aliased
- drawing is slower than the normal setting.
-
- ArtWorks rendering can take advantage of different screen palettes. Inside
- the !AWViewer program are two alternative 16 colour screen mode palettes.
- To load these palettes hold down SHIFT and double click on the !AWViewer to
- open the program directory. There should be two files shown here called Grey
- and Primary. To load either just drag the file onto the Palette icon on the
- left side of the icon bar.
-
- The grey palette sets the screen to be 16 shades of grey. ArtWorks then
- dithers these to show perfectly smooth graduated grey-scales. The Primary
- palette slightly alters some of the desktop colours to allow ArtWorks to
- shows a better range of colours. To set the screen palette back to the
- default simply select the Default menu option from the Palette icon on the
- icon bar.
-
- Current Acorn hardware does not allow palettes to be changed in 256 colour
- modes.
-
- Note that background layers will not be rendered.
-
- Incorporating the ArtWorks renderer in your own programs

- Technical notes
- ---------------
- This version of the viewer displays files from ArtWorks version 1.10 and
- earlier. It does not incorporate the sprite dithering technology of
- ArtWorks version 1.10 and all sprites are shown non-dithered as they would
- appear in other Acorn applications.
-
- When creating ArtWorks files to be viewed by this viewer program remember
- that the machine being used may not have the same fonts. The viewer program
- will not display a font if it cannot find the exact match, however there
- are two ways you can ensure that text does get displayed no matter what
- fonts are available.
-
- Firstly, performing a 'Makes shapes' operation on any text turns it into
- graphic outlines - but it no longer remains editable. Secondly, by giving
- the text an outline colour, or in fact performing any operation that forces
- ArtWorks to use text outlines, such as distorting it in an envelope or
- giving it a graduated colour fill, will also make ArtWorks store and display
- the text using the outlines. This second method has the advantage that text
- will remain as text so that it could be edited in ArtWorks at a later date
- if so desired.
-
- Both options involve making ArtWorks draw the text using the font outline
- shapes and so you should be aware that text displayed this way will be
- slower. It will also greatly increase the size of the ArtWorks files.

- Impression
- ----------
- Impression Junior version 1.18 and Impression II version 2.18 and later can
- accept, display and print ArtWorks files directly. If you have earlier
- versions of either program then you can upgrade for ú10 + VAT by returning
- your disc 1, with payment, to Computer Concepts.
-
- If you already own a copy of ArtWorks then there is no charge for the
- upgrade. In this case just return your Impression disc 1 quoting your
- ArtWorks serial number and we will return a replacement disc.
