Because cats are efficient hunters of highly nutritional food, they are able to spend much of their daily life resting and sleeping between meals. In this Japanese watercolor from the mid-1800s, the artist has successfully captured the calm, almost self-satisfied, lack of concern of a comfortable sleeping cat. Cats are able to change from activity to complete relaxation very quickly, and can waken fully in an instant, giving rise to the term "catnap" to describe a short sleep. SEF ALSO
