1. INTRODUCTION
Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of the Official
Dancing Baby CD Player! This program is the only one that is
acknowledged by Kinetix, the creators of the Dancing Baby. With
over 40 different animations and the ability to play any music CD,
you have the best and most versatile program of it's kind. You can
even add your own animations! You can download a new baby animation
from the Internet and easily integrate it into the program making it
totally expandable!
2. USING THE PROGRAM
Using this program is easy and fun. All of the controls you would
expect a CD Player to have are here, and some new ones to let you
make the baby dance and control his actions.
Center stage is the video console. Here is where you can watch the
dancing baby do his thing. On the top and bottom of the video window
are small green display areas. The top area has important info about
the CD you have in your drive, including the current track, the track
time, and the speed the baby is dancing at. The bottom display area
contains all of the tracks on the CD. If there are more than 10
tracks, you can click on one of the arrows next to this area to see
another 10 tracks.
Below the video console are the main controls for the CD Player.
On the left are three buttons, with LED's above them. From left to
right they are: Repeat Track, Repeat CD, and Mix. Clicking on one of
these buttons will turn on the corresponding LED indicating it's on.
Repeat Track will play the current track over and over. Repeat CD
will play the entire CD over and over. Mix will play the songs in
random order.
To the right of these buttons are + and - buttons. Clicking on these
adjusts the speed the baby dances. You can make him go faster or
slower to match the song.
To the right of that, is a round jog shuttle. The arrows on this
shuttle control the CD Player. These controls are: Play, Stop,
Previous Track, and Next Track.
On the right edge of the screen is a film strip. Clicking on one
of the frames will change the baby animation that is playing. You
can use the up and down arrows to see more animations.
On the left edge of the screen are two icons. The top icon is a
screen with arrows shooting out from all sides. Click on this to
play the animation full screen. To get out of full screen
mode, click the mouse. Below that is a disco ball icon. Clicking
this plays the animation in Disco Mode! Check it out!
On the lower left hand corner of the screen are the Setup and Help
buttons. Setup allows you to configure different options for the CD
player. Make sure to check this screen out to see if you want to
make any changes to how the program operates. It is a good idea to
go to the setup screen the first time you start the program. The
help button displays this file.
3. ADDING/REMOVING NEW ANIMATIONS
Adding new animations couldn't be easier. All you need to do is copy
the new animation into the "clips" folder. If you let the Dancing
Baby CD Player install into the default folder when you first
installed it, you would put the new animation(s) in your
"c:\babycdse\clips" folder. Any animation the program finds in this
folder will be displayed within the Dancing Baby CD Player the next
time you run it. So where do you get all of these new animations?
There are lots of animations on the CD itself in the "\animations"
folder, the "\more animations" folder and the "\more animations 2"
folder. Also, be sure and visit www.dancingbabycd.com for the very
latest animations and links to tons of dancing baby web sites around
the world!
Important! Your animation file should be a Video for Windows file
(.AVI) If you attempt to install a Quicktime video file (.MOV), you
will need to have Quicktime installed or the program will not work
properly when it attempts to play the clip.
If you REALLY want to be cool, you also might want to make a custom
thumbnail for your new clip! To do this, make a small .BMP image
80x60. Name it the same exact name as your .AVI file, but with the
extension .BMP and place it in the "c:\babycdse\clips" folder.
The program will automatically display the thumbnail in the film
strip so you can click on it to see your new animations.
Note: You don't need to do this.... if you don't make a custom .BMP,
the program will use a generic one and overlay the filename of your
video clip. Try it and you will see what I mean.
Also, keep in mind that you can also REMOVE any animations that you
don't want. All you have to do is delete the corresponding .AVI/.MOV
file from the "clips" folder.
4. WINDOWS AUTOPLAY ISSUES
If you have "Autoplay" enabled, Windows will automatically launch
its' own cd player when you insert a music CD. This may interfere
with the Dancing Baby CD Player. You have three options when
dealing with this. (1) Turn off Autoplay, (2) Close the Windows CD
Player each time it launches, and then run the Dancing Baby CD
Player, or (3) go to the Setup Screen in the Dancing Baby CD Player
program and click on the option that sets the Dancing Baby CD Player
to launch as your default CD Player (recommended). If you make the
Dancing Baby CD Player your default CD player and decide later you
want to restore the Windows CD Player as the default you can do
that too in the Setup Menu.
5. HISTORY OF THE DANCING BABY
In an excerpt from a Jan. 16 1998 Press Release from Kinetix, we
learn where the dancing baby came from:
Dancing Baby was created with Character Studio to illustrate to
animators that it's easy to produce 3D characters who have real
personality and charisma," said Jim Guerard, general manager of
Kinetix. "We're delighted to see that so many people on the Internet
are finding it fun and easy to personalize this memorable animated
character."
Originally named Baby Cha-Cha, Dancing Baby was sent to
customers in 1997 as an example of the advanced 3D character
animation that can be created using Character Studio. Since then,
graphics enthusiasts around the world have used the Internet to
share the 3D model with others who develop their own versions of
Dancing Baby. Although no official count exists, today there are
more than a dozen different versions of Dancing Baby available via
the Internet, including Kickboxing Baby, Rasta Baby, Retro Baby,
Psycho Baby and Techno Baby. One Web site even featured a
contest to determine the song best suited to accompany Dancing
Baby.
You can get more info by visiting our official website:
www.dancingbabycd.com and following links. Or visit, Kinetix at
www.ktx.com. You can even download the dancing baby model from
Viewpoint at http://www.viewpoint.com/cgi-bin/ktx.pl?ktx for
use in your 3D animation programs.
6. TROUBLESHOOTING
Q: The baby won't dance! or The baby only takes a few steps
when I hit Play, then stops!
A: You need to insert a Music CD into your CD-ROM drive.
Any CD you play on your home stereo will work.
Q: The display window is blank! I can't view any of the baby video
clips!
A: There is a problem with your digital video driver. Every
Win95/98/NT system should have that installed and functioning
properly, but for some reason yours may not be. To remedy this,
visit www.microsoft.com and download the latest version of
"Active Movie". After you install this, you should have the
latest drivers and everything will work properly. The latest
version (at the time of publishing) of Active Movie has been
included on this CD for your conven
