ABC LEARN !!!!
V1.0
WRITTEN BY:
DAVE SCHOEFFEL
INTRODUCTION
I wrote the ABC Learn program as an aid to help my 3 year old son learn to
recognize the letters of the alphabet. As children learn the ABC song, they
cannot always associate the letters with the song that they are singing.
This program has colors and noises to help keep the attention of most kids.
It took me quite some time to write the program. It wasn't all that hard, I
just had to work around my son, who always wanted to use it. I guess I am
going to have to get another computer. Now, how can I convince my wife......
This program was written using Microsoft Visual Basic version 1.0 to run under
Windows 3.0 and must have the VBRUN100.DLL file located in your path. Simply
place VBRUN100.DLL in your Windows directory (or any convenient directory
in your path) and forget about it. This file is available on most bulletin
boards as well as other sources, and should be obtained and installed prior
to using the To Do List.
VERSION INFORMATION
Version 1.0 Initial Release.

REGISTRATION
This program is being released as Shareware. Please feel free to copy and
distribute it freely amoung your friends and business associates. I would
ask, however, that if you find the program useful (the definition of useful
in this case meaning that you still have it installed after your evaluation,
then it must be useful) please send the registration fee of $3 to:
Dave Schoeffel
1313 Riverton Dr.
Mukwonago, WI 53149
Your registration will encourage me to create other useful programs. You
will also rest assured that you have done your good deed for the day.
Registration has been made simple for the user. Simply run the program and
choose the GAME - ABOUT option from the menu. This information screen has
a registration form on it and can be filled in by the user and printed out
to be mailed in. Please take a few short minutes to register your copy.
FILES
The following files should have been included in the ZIP file that you
received (or all files included from whatever your source for this program):
ABCLEARN.DOC This file that you are reading.
ABCLEARN.EXE The executable code for the ABC Learn program.
ABCLEARN.CFG The config. file for game status (sound,etc.).
INSTALLATION
To install the program, simply copy all of the files listed above into a
subdirectory. Remember that you need the VBRUN100.DLL file somewhere in your
path to use the ABC Learn program.
RUNNING
You may run the ABC Learn program several different ways. You could open
File Manager and double click on the ABCLEARN.EXE file name. It could also be
installed via Program Manager into any convenient group. Another method of
running the ABC Learn program is to install it into your WIN.INI file. This
will assure that whenever Windows is started, the ABC Learn program will
automatically load.
To do this, simply edit your WIN.INI file with a text editor or from within
Windows using the SYSEDIT.EXE function. In the WIN.INI file locate the line
that says LOAD= and insert (Drive):(Path)\ABCLEARN.EXE. This will load the
ABC Learn program every time that Windows is run.
OPERATION
Operating the ABC Learn program is simple. The top display box shows the
alphabet to the child. The second display box shows the childs progress in
the current game. All of the correct letters that the child has chosen, in
order, are displayed in this box. Regardless of the users level, the goal of
this game is to choose the letters in order, ABC....
When the alphabet has been completed in the correct order, the child is
rewarded with the ABC song. The child uses the mouse to point to the next
letter in the order of the alphabet. This next letter may not necessarily be
in order on the letter selection area of the game, depending on the level
chosen under options. For more information on level, see the OPTIONS
descriptions below. The following section of this document describes all of
the features and how to use them.
GAME - NEW
The GAME - NEW option of the menu simply starts a new game for the child. All
of the letters are re-enabled and, depending on the user level chosen under
OPTIONS, the letters may re-scramble on the screen.
GAME - ABOUT
The GAME - ABOUT option of the menu gives general information about the
program and the programmer. This is also the option that should be used to
register your copy of the ABC Learn program. Simply choose GAME - ABOUT from
the menu, fill in the registration form, print it out, and mail it complete
with the registration fee to the programmer listed.
GAME - EXIT
The GAME - EXIT option of the menu allows the user to completly exit the
ABC Learn program and terminate any further ABC Learning activity.
OPTIONS - SOUND ON
The OPTIONS - SOUND ON option of the menu will turn the sounds in the game
on. Touching a correct letter, a wrong sequence letter, and any place on
the form will create some kind of sound. This option is then recorded in the
.CFG file and will remain in effect until changed. This includes the next
time or times that the program is started.
OPTIONS - SOUND OFF
The OPTIONS - SOUND OFF option of the menu is just the opposite of the SOUND
ON option. No sounds whatsoever will be heard during the course of the game.
Again, this option is recorded in the .CFG file and will remain in effect
until changed by the user.
OPTIONS - HINT ON
Within the border of the next letter to be chosen is a dotted rectangle that
is present in all Windows applications on the control buttons. This highlight
shows the next button to be pressed in the sequence. Choosing the HINT ON
option will allow this dotted rectangle to be seen. Just like the sound
options, this option is written to the .CFG file and will remain in effect
until changed by the user.
OPTIONS - HINT OFF
The OPTIONS - HINT OFF option of the menu is just the opposite of the HINT ON
option. The dotted rectangle will not be visible on the next button in the
sequence. This option is also saved in the .CFG file and remains in effect
until changed by the user.
OPTIONS - BEGINNER
The OPTIONS-BEGINNER choice on the menu will simply place the letters in order
on the game form. This is for children that are just starting to learn the
alphabet. As the child gets progressively better at letter recognition, the
more advanced option below should be used. This option also is saved for all
future sessions of the ABC Learning program until changed by the user.
OPTIONS -INTERMEDIATE
The OPTIONS - INTERMEDIATE choice on the menu will scramble all of the letters
within a row. All of the letters remain in the same row that they would in
the BEGINNER level, the difference being that the order is scrambled. This
option should be used when the child has learned quite a few of the letters
by sight. When the child gets fairly proficient at this level, the ADVANCED
level, described below, should be used. This option, like all of the options,
is saved and remains in effect until changed by the user.
OPTIONS - ADVANCED
The OPTIONS - ADVANCED choice on the menu will scramble all of the letters on
the entire screen. The A could turn up anywhere, the B could turn up anywhere
etc. This option is the most challenging and when your child is proficient
at this level, I feel it is safe to say that they know the alphabet.
HINTS, TIPS, SUGGESTIONS
And now for my sermon....
With all of the discussions that we hear today about the quality of education
in our schools, it is a wonder that anybody learns anything. In my opinion,
children need as much positive reinforcement as they can possibly get. They
must get this from their parent
