We have made every effort to make this software as powerful,
flexible, accurate, inexpensive, and as easy to use as possible.
However, we know this software is not perfect even though we have
spent hundreds of hours writing this software, collecting the
data, and writing the reviews. If you find inaccuracies or have
any suggestions, please write us at one of the above addresses.
INTRODUCTION
Almost everyone has had the frustrating experience of spending
an hour or so browsing the titles in a video store only to end up
with a movie you didn't like anyway. The purpose of MOVIES TO
GO! is to help you discover movies that suit your personal taste
so that you will spend more time watching enjoyable movies
instead of wandering the isles of the video store.
This booklet will introduce you to MOVIES TO GO!'s powerful
search features. After a few minutes you will be a master at
finding movies:
- with your favorite actors / actresses
- directed by the most talented directors
- in categories such as comedy, romance, drama, war, etc.
- which have been assigned a particular rating by the MPAA
- without offensive language or scenes
- which won Academy Awards
- in a special category, such as "Dog Movies" or "Tough Guys"
- and more!
WHY MOVIES TO GO! IS UNIQUE
MOVIES TO GO! is different than the other books and software
about movies in the following ways:
1. The reviews were not written by movie critics, but were
written by ordinary people who like to watch movies.
2. MOVIES TO GO! is comprised mainly of movies which are
enjoyable to watch. We don't want MOVIES TO GO! (and your
hard drive) cluttered with poor movies.
3. Most sources list only the director, principal actors,
MPAA rating, length, and a short synopsis. MOVIES TO GO!
goes further by listing up to three categories, the main
characters, several special categories, possible
objectionable content, and a detailed review.
4. MOVIES TO GO! has stunning, fun-filled graphics! People
who have reviewed at least ten movies have their picture
displayed on the screen. We are currently working on
obtaining the rights to display actor's pictures.
MOVIES TO GO! Documentation Page 2
THE MAIN MENU
One of the first things that appear on the screen is the MAIN
MOVIE MENU. In the upper right hand corner is the number of
movies this menu contains. To display the information about a
certain movie just type the first few letters of the title.
For example, if you want to see the information on the movie
RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, type "raiders" and the movie with the
closest matching title (in this case, Raiders of the Lost Ark)
will be highlighted on the screen. Press the [Enter] Key to look
at the information MOVIES TO GO! has stored about the movie.
SEARCHES
Unless you know exactly which movie you want, you will probably
find that the MAIN MOVIE MENU has too many movies listed to be of
much use. Press the [F2] key to search for particular types of
movie you enjoy watching. You can do the following types of
searches:
- Category (Action, Adventure, Comedy, Romance, War, etc.)
- Review (Good, Average, and Poor)
- Cast (John Wayne, Harrison Ford, Sigorney Weaver, etc)
- Director (John Ford, Woody Allen, Steven Spielberg, etc.)
- Year (1992, 1940 - 1949, 1980 - 1999, etc.)
- Rating (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17, and None)
- Key Word (Disney Movies, Nothing Offensive, etc.)
- Any combination of the above
CATEGORY SEARCHES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Category search is the first menu option; to select it press
the [Enter] key. The Category Menu lists 25 categories from
which you can choose:
Action Family Musical
Adventure Fantasy Mystery
Animated Fitness Romance
Children Foreign Sci-Fi
Comedy Historical Sports
Classics Horror Suspense
Crime Intrigue War
Documentary Music Video Western
Drama
MOVIES TO GO! Documentation Page 3
Action movies usually have battles, fight scenes, drug
dealers, criminals, guns, karate, fast cars,
explosions, chase scenes, and other violent themes.
Adventure movies have pirates, heroes, jungles, wild animals,
exploring, mountains, space ships, or other larger
than life experiences.
Animated movies are composed primarily of cartoon characters.
Children means that the movie was aimed primarily at
children, not adults. A recent example is TEENAGE
MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II. This is different than a
"Family" movie, in that family movies have something
to interest mom and dad too.
Comedy is a movie which shows the lighter side of life.
This is a broad category and will comprise about one
fourth of all the movies in MOVIES TO GO! Searching
for comedy movies should usually be combined with a
search in another category. For example, searching
for Action-Comedies would list such movies as LETHAL
WEAPON. For details, see "Searches in More Than One
Category" below.
Crime has do do with illegal activities where the police
or private detectives get involved.
Documentary movies are based on fact, and are written primarily
to provide information about an event, person, or
place.
Drama shows the serious side of life. As with the comedy
category, "Drama" covers more than one third of the
movies in MOVIES TO GO! Searching for dramas should
usually be combined with a search in another
category. For details, see "Searches in More Than
One Category" below.
Family movies are good, clean, movies that will interest
both adults and children. Walt Disney was a master
at producing family movies.
Fantasy usually has dragons, mythology, sorcery, ghosts,
time travel, and other fun stuff.
Fitness is usually videos aimed at helping you get yourself
in shape.
Foreign is a movie made outside the United States, in a
language other than English, or is subtitled or
dubbed.
MOVIES TO GO! Documentation Page 4
Historical movies are based on an historical event. However,
most historical movies are better at entertaining
audiences than they are at depicting an accurate
representation of what really happened and what the
people were like.
Horror movies have monsters, werewolves, vampires, and
other scary creatures. Many recent horror movies
have ax murderers, slashers, rapists and psychopaths
who fill the screen with violence; and for this
reason, we omitted most of the modern horror movies.
Intrigue is spy movies, and other cloak-and-dagger fun stuff.
You will find all the James Bond films listed in the
intrigue category.
Music Video takes a popular song and combines it with an
entertaining video script to more fully bring the
mood of the song to life. They are usually centered
around just one performer or music group.
Musical is both "musicals", such as THE SOUND OF MUSIC and
movies which revolve around music such as AMADEUS.
Most of Elvis Presley's movies are listed under the
category "musical" but they aren't "musicals" in the
traditional sense of the word.
Mystery movies usually have a detective trying to piece
together the parts of a complex puzzle.
Romance is a movie where two people fall in love and try to
build a relationship.
Sci-Fi Science fiction movies are usually set in outer
space, have aliens, ray guns, flying saucers, and
other fun stuff.
Sports is a movie about basketball, baseball, boxing, etc.
Suspense movies keep the audience biting their fingernails in
anticipation of what is about to happen next.
War movies were very popular after World War II, but we
usually categorize any movie which has armed
conflict as a major theme as a "war" movie. That
was the rationale for this classification for the
movie ROBIN HOOD -- PRINCE OF THIEVES.
Westerns usually take place in North America during the late
1800s, but some westerns take place in Australia
too.
MOVIES TO GO! Documentation Page 5
SEARCHES IN MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MOVIES TO GO! is unique in movies can be categorized in up to
three different categories. To categorize, for example,
"Westerns" all together and pretend they are all the same is
preposterous. The highly dramatic western HIGH NOON is more like
the science fiction movie OUTLAND than it is Mel Brook's western
comedy BLAZING SADDLES.
You will have more success finding movies you want to watch with
MOVIES TO GO! if you search for movies in at least two
categories. After you have pressed the [F2] Search key, and
selected the "Category" menu option, use the arrow keys to
highlight the category your are interested in. Press the
[F3] Mark key to "Mark" that category, and arrow to the next
category you are interested in. Press the [F3] key to mark that
category, then press the [Enter] key. Now press Find It! to
begin your search.
Only MOVIES TO GO! allows you to distinguish between movies which
are Action-Comedy, Romance-Comedy, Drama-Comedy, Western-Comedy,
and over 13,000 different category combinations. Use it!
REVIEW SEARCHES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MOVIES TO GO! rates movies in one of three categories:
Good
Average
Poor
We have made an attempt to include mostly "Good" and "Average"
movies in MOVIES TO GO!, but you are the final judge of what a
"good" movie is. Movies which were among the Top 10 in box
office gross for the year were judged as "Good", as were those
nominated for Best Picture by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences. Other pictures, such as "Children of a Lesser
God", which was #47 in box office gross receipts at only $8.7
Million are listed as "Good" because the reviewer liked it very
much.
As you can see, Review Searches are pretty subjective. Keep in
mind that many fine films haven't been reviewed at all and won't
appear in any of the three categories. This number should
decrease in the future as more and more people submit reviews for
these movies to us. For information about how to submit reviews
for publication in MOVIES TO GO!, see the section titled
"Submitting Reviews for publication in MOVIES TO GO!".
Here's how to do a Review Search:
1. Press the [F2] Search key
2. Select "Review" from the search menu
MOVIES TO GO! Documentation Page 6
3. Press the "A" key for "Average" or the "G" key for "Good",
then press [Enter]
4. Find IT!
A menu listing all the "Good", "Average", or "Poor" movies will
appear on the screen.
DIRECTOR SEARCHES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The director's job is to make sure that all the parts of a movie
come together in a way which will tell the story best. If a movie
is extremely well done, the director was a big part of it. Some
of the best directors include: John Ford, Steven Spielberg, Frank
Capra, Robert Wise, William Wyler, Billy Wilder, Michael Curtiz,
Elia Kazan, John Huston, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, George Stevens,
Fred Zinnemann, David Lean, Robert Benton, Robert Redford, George
Cukor, George Roy Hill, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Milos
Forman, Bernardo Bertolucci, Sydney Pollack, Oliver Stone, Barry
Levinson, John Sturges, Peter Wier, Richard Donner, Jonathan

YEAR SEARCHES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you like old movies, or would you rather watch more recent
movies? The year search feature will help you narrow your movie
list even further. For example, here's how you search for all
movies which were released in 1980 or later:
1. Press the [F2] Search key
2. Select "Year" from the search menu
3. Type 1980 in the "From Year" field, then press [Enter]
4. Leave the "To Year" field blank by pressing [Enter]
5. FIND IT!
To search for a single year, type that year in both the "From
Year" and "To Year" fields.
To search for all the movies in a range of years, enter those
years in the "From Year" and "To Year" fields.
RATING SEARCHES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has issued
ratings to most movies released after 1968 which will give you an
idea of a movie's possible objectionable material. These ratings
are:
G "General Audiences. All ages admitted."
PG "Parental Guidance Suggested. Some material may not be
suitable for children.
PG-13 "Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some material may be
inappropriate for children under 13."
R "Restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or
adult guardian."
NC-17 "No children under 17 admitted."
Note: MPAA ratings have undergone slight changes over the years.
Movies rated which were previously rated "GP", we have listed as
"PG"; movies previously rated "M" are listed as "PG-13"; movies
previously rated "X" are listed as "NC-17".
To search for movies which have been designated with a certain
rating press the [F2] Search key, select "Review" from the menu,
arrow down the the desired rating, press [Enter], then FIND IT!
If you are looking to avoid movies which have objectionable
material, do a multiple search for "G", "PG" and "Not Rated"
movies by "marking" these categories with the [F3] Mark key.
NOTE: Be cautious of movies issued after 1980 which fall into the
"Not Rated" category. Some films, such as ANGEL HEART, 9 1/2
MOVIES TO GO! Documentation Page 9
WEEKS, and WARRIOR QUEEN have unrated, more explicit versions in
video which go beyond their original "R" rating. We will try to
alert you to these films in the "Contains" section.
KEY WORD SEARCHES

Key word searches are perhaps the most fun searches to do of all!
You can search for literally ANYTHING using the Key Word Search.
We have tried to make it easier for you to find movies of
particular interest by adding the "Special Categories" section.
To search for a key word, or group of words do the following:

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF MOVIES TO GO!
Performing a multiple search is the key to instantly displaying a
list of enjoyable movies on your screen. A few dozen key strokes
is a lot easier than aimlessly wandering the isles of your video
store! For example:
Let's say you've had a long day at work and feel like watching a
good, romantic comedy. You've seen most of the recent stuff, and
you want to watch the movie with your teenage daughter, not be
embarrassed by lots of sex scenes. In other words, you want to
do a compound Category Search, a Review Search, a Year Search,
and a Key Word Search simultaneously.
It's really not that difficult. Here's how:
1. Press the [F2] Search key
2. Select "Category" from the Search Menu
3. Use the [F3] Mark key as explained above to "mark" both
"Comedy" and "Romance" categories, then press [Enter]
4. Select "Review" from the Search Menu
5. Arrow down to "Good" and press [Enter]
6. Select "Year" from the Search Menu
7. Enter From Year "1900" To Year "1980" as explained above
8. Select "Key Word" from Search Menu
9. Enter the phrase "Nothing Offensive"
10. FIND IT!
After the search, the titles of twenty or more good romantic
comedies will be listed on the the screen. Read what
MOVIES TO GO! has to say about each one, and press the [F4] Print
key on the titles you are interested in. Take the list to take
to your video store; better yet, call your video store first to
make sure the titles you want are available. MOVIES TO GO! will
help you sort through the thousands of movie titles and will help
you get the most out of your video dollar.
DIFFERENCES IN THE GRAPHICS VERSION
The graphics edition of MOVIES TO GO! requires an EGA monitor and
640 K of memory. Because of the number of graphics images that
are displayed on the screen, we recommend that your computer be
at least a 386, but this is not required.
We originally wanted to release MOVIES TO GO! with at least 500
scanned photos of cast members; unfortunately, we weren't able to
obtain permission for these photos yet. Version 1.1 was released
with only two: James Stewart and Donna Reed from the movie "It's
a Wonderful Life", which is in the public domain. We are
currently asking movie and video companies for press release
MOVIES TO GO! Documentation Page 12
photos which we can scan, and add to MOVIES TO GO! Registered
users will be notified when these photos become available.
If you are using a mouse, the graphics edition of MOVIES TO GO!
has the ability to do searches from the NOW SHOWING screen.
Simply click the mouse on the category, actor, director, or key
word you want to search for. If you want to search by more than
one category, click between the two you want to search for. If
you want to search for two words, click between them.
If you find the graphics version too sluggish, you can run the
standard version by running the command TEXT instead of MOVIES.
HOW MOVIES WERE SELECTED FOR MOVIES TO GO!
Over 50,000 movies have been released in this century, and more
than 500 new movies are released each year. Separating the best
movies from the run of the mill is not an easy task, and is one
which we continue with every day. We selected movies which fall
into at least one of the following categories:
1. We chose movies which were one of the top 10 movies in
box office gross ticket sales in the United States in a
given year. "Gone With the Wind" qualifies in this
category for three different years.
2. We researched movies which were nominated for Best
Picture by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences.
3. We found movies which were highly acclaimed by several
movie critics.
4. Lastly, we added movies in which a movie reviewer wrote a
credible review about a movie they liked very much.
SUBMITTING REVIEWS FOR PUBLICATION IN MOVIES TO GO!
Since the reviews for MOVIES TO GO! are written by ordinary
people who like to watch movies, we naturally, are interested in
having as many people as possible submit reviews for publication.
You can submit reviews for your favorite movies with the
following understanding:

3. If you are a registered user and five or more of your
reviews are accepted for publication, we will send you a
free update which contains your reviews and your scanned
photo, if you sent one.
4. We will notify you in writing within ten working days
whether or not we have accepted the reviews you have
submitted.
5. As of this writing, about 75% of the movies in MOVIES TO GO!
still list "No Review Available." instead of a written
review. If you submit a review for one of these movies you
have a much greater chance of having your review published.
