Adam, The result codes are all listed in the modem user's manual beginning on
page 3-6. The init string is: AT&F2E0Q0V0 Set your baud rate to 19,200 and
set com flags to force baud rate and turn off XON/XOFF.
If you need a more specific init string, please upload a copy of your software

_______________________________________________________________________________
I BUILD SYSTEMS FOR A LIVING AND MY HARDWARE SUPPLIER HAS RECENTLY STARTED
CARRYING THE GVC (OR MITAC) 14400 FAX MODEM AS OF LATE. EVERYTHING HAS GONE
FINE SINCE I FOUND OUT THAT THE MITAC IS ACTUALLY A GVC. I HAVE RUN INTO A BIT
OF A PROBLEM THIS WEEKEND HOWEVER.
I AM BUILDING THREE 486DX-50 SYSTEMS AND INSTALLING MITACS IN ALL THREE. THESE
SYSTEMS ALSO HAVE SOUND BLASTER 16 MULTI-CD CARDS WITH THE ASP UPGRADE IN THEM.
THE PROBLEM IS SIMPLE TO STATE. WHEN THE MODEM IS PLUGGED INTO THE MOTHERBOARD,
THE SOUND BLASTER CARDS GET DMA ERRORS AND FAIL THE TEST PROGRAM THAT COMES
WITH THEM. WHEN THE MITAC CARD IS REMOVED FORM THE SYSTEM, THE SOUND BLASTER
CARDS WORK FINE.
I SPENT 6 HOURS ON THE PHONE WITH CREATIVE LABS TODAY FIGURING THIS OUT. WHEN
THE MITAC CARD IS PLUGGED INTO THE SYSTEM, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH DMA CHANNELS
YOU SELECT FOR THE SB CARD, THEY ALL FAIL!!. BOTH 8 AND 16 BIT DMA. WE USED
DIFFERENT INTERRUPTS, DIFFERENT DMA CHANNELS, DIFFERENT EVERYTHING, INCLUDING
THREE OTHER SB CARDS AND TWO OTHER MITAC MODEMS.
THE SYSTEMS I AM BUILDING ARE USING TWO DIFFERENT MOTHERBOARDS. I AM HAVING THE
LEAST TROUBLE WITH THE GHLV BOARD WHICH USES THE CEASAR CHIPSET. THE MOST
PROBLEMS ARE COMING FROM AN ISA LB MOTHERBOARD WITH A TOSHIBA 2 CHIPSET.
I HAVE SET THE MITAC CARDS TO EVERY POSSIBLE COMM PORT AND THE SB CARD STILL
REFUSES TO OPERATE CORRECTLY WITH THE MODEM CARD INSTALLED IN THE SYSTEM. TAKE
THE MODEM OUT, THE SB CARD RUNS FINE!! I CAN INSTALL AT I/O CARDS IN THE
SYSTEMS AND SET THE COMM PORTS TO ANYTHING I WANT AND THE SB STILL RUNS IT'S
TEST FINE. PUT THE MODEM IN, CRASHOLA AGAIN!!
I NEED SOME ASSISTANCE WITH THIS PROBLEM AS SOON AS YOU CAN HELP ME. IF WE NEED
TO USE VOICE LINES TO DO SOME TROUBLESHOOTING, LEAVE A MESSAGE FOR ME AT
1-305-763-6054.
THANKS,
UNCLE MIKEY

Michael: I also build systems and use the GVC internal 14400 modems. I have
ahd absolutely no problems mating the GVC's to SB16's on a 486-50 Mother-
board. I've even done it with 2 other serial devices and a bus mouse thrown in
for good measure. There may be something non-kosher about the Mitac-Gvc
boards you got. I have had success even with the very first GVC's with the
little daughter boards attached. Timing problems may be the culprit or you
need to get a true-blue GVC to try. Catherine

Pat, You need to enable the error correction in order to achieve the higher
speeds. To do this, set your baud rate to 19,200 baud, and set your init string

Hi,
I noticed that you frequently refer in your feedback messages to set the DTE
rate on the internal modems to 19.2? What is the difference between setting it
to 19.2 vise 38.4??? Do you gain better through put or transfer speeds with it
set to 19.2? Currently I have my comm port locked using BNU fossil to 38.4, and
have all of my comm programs (including bbs) setup for 38.4... Just
curious....... Thanks!
P.S. any luck with the 14.4 setup with BGFAX?

Jim, We usually suggest a 19,200bps DTE speed because it is the least likely to
give you CRC errors. If your equipment (computer, serial ports, etc.) can
support faster speeds without dropping characters, etc. then use a faster
speed. Our 144 modems will support DTE speeds up to 57,600bps. You might want
to do a little experimenting.
We have not heard anything more about BGfax as of yet.

Kevin, Are you referring to PCPLUS for windows or DOS? If you are referring to
the DOS version, if there is a setting for a GVC 9600 v.32/v.42, use that
setting. If there is no such selection, choose a Hayes compatible 2400, and
change the settings to the following:
Init string: AT&F2L1V1^M Auto Baud Detect: off XON/XOFF: off RTS/CTS: on
Baud Rate: 19,200bps
Those settings should have you up and running in Procomm Plus.

Hello,
I am having problems with one on my GVC 14.4 internal modems. The modem
refuses to answer a fax or data call. I have the dram setup the exact same as
my other modems and switched out the modems to check if it was a software
problem, but it doesn't answer on any comm software. I believe it has a
different Rom version, but not sure. Have any other GVC mdoems had this
problem and what might be the solution.
Also, what is the warrenty on GVC mdoems, will you replace it if it is a
problem with the ROM? The modem is about one year old.
Thanks for you help.

Jeff, The modem may have an older version of the ROM BIOS. To find out, type
ATI1 at a terminal screen and relay the response to us.
The Warranty on GVC branded 144 modems is 5 years. If your modem does need a
bios upgrade, you can perform that yourself with an upgrade chip we can send.
Let us know your configurations and the response to the ATI1 command.

Terry, The ARA scripts for the 9600 and 144 are identical (except for the
name). You should get the same results with either script. What version of
the Eprom is in your modem? (ATI1 from terminal mode gets the version #) You
might want to have the other modem checked to insure that it is working

Jeff, The fax software you have might not be the correct class to work with the
144. The 144 modem you have is a class 2 faxmodem. You might have class 1
Ultrafax. If this is the case, the two are incompatible. If Ultrafax is class
2, or multiclass, then you might want to check to make sure that it is
installed for the correct comport, and that all other major settings are
correct.
You should have also received fax software with the modem. You might want to
use that software instead of your Ultrafax.

_______________________________________________________________________________
Hi Guys (or gals) - I have a GVC 14.4 v.32 v.42 modem that I've been using for
about a year now. Overall, I'm pleased with it. I am a bit disappointed in the
way it is behaving on high speed transfers. I am operating the modem on a BBS
which is running in Desqview. I seem to get a lot of errors on file transfers.
I have been told that it is because the modem has a 16450 UART buffer and not
the 16550. I have had to lock the modem down to 19200 baud to be able to
transfer files with minimal errors. Any higher baud rates makes transfers
impossible.
Question: 1. Is it true that it is the 16450 that is messing things up for me?
2. If it is, is there someway to upgrade the UART to a 16550? 3. Do you have
any other suggestions as to what I might try to reduce the errors?
Thanks for your time.

Jim, The 16450 Uart can cause overrun errors if your baud rate is set too high
for your computer to handle. The best way to cut down the errors is to lower
the baud rate, as you have already done. The Uart chips on the modems are not
upgradeable.

disabled by the *70 code, your modem sessions will be interrupted by the "BEEP"
and the other call. As soon as you switch to the other call, your modem will
lose its carrier, and depending on your settings, hang up. You will not be
able to continue the modem call after switching to your other call.
We usually reccomend using the *70 to disable call waiting when making an
outgoing modem call.

I have a GVC 9600V and it does not want to dial and gives a no dialtone error
although there is one. I can connect manually. Also after being online for a
while it will drop sending data so that the download will fail. I get messages
from the board that my download has failed but can go no further. I have to
hang up to logoff.
Question 1. Is it a software or hardware problem?
Question 2. If hardware is it fixable?
Thanx . Leonce

Leonce, It sounds like you are having a software setup problem. If that is the
case, it will be pretty easy to remedy. If your problem is due to hardware,
you will need to obtain a Return Merchandise Authorization number from Tech
Support and send the modem to us for repair.
Some things you might wish to check: If your modem has V.42 error correction
and flow control;
Set your init string to AT&F2E1L1V1&C1&D2S0=0S7=90 Set your baud rate to 19200,
Enable RTS/CTS flow control, Disable Xon/Xoff flow control, Disable Autobaud.
If your modem does not have V.42, make sure the BBs you are connecting to
supports 9600bps, and that you do not have any line noise on your telephone
system. Set your modem init string for AT&FE1L1V1&C1&D2S0=0S7=90

I left a message by phone earlier today, if you could call me back voice that

Scot, There is not a way to configure the modem to disconnect automatically,
that we know of, when another incoming call comes in. Your telephone will not
ring when that other call comes in, either. The reason for this is that the
line is already in use. You might notice a "glitch" on the screen when your
call waiting tone interrupts data. If being able to receive calls at all times
is a critical issue, you might want to have a second line installed for
modem/outgoing calls only.

The Hayes Ultra V-Series modem that you are using uses a Proprietary standard
for communication at 9600bps. (it is not v.32 compliant) Therefore, unless

Rick, This BBS Supports communication at 144. (We and many customers log on at
this speed every day.)
The string that you are using on the modem DOES disable v.42 error correction
and data compression.
Without Error correction, the highest speed which you can achieve with our
modem is 9600.
As for the screen colors, if your computer and software supports ANSI graphics
(and Many do) Then the BBS Comes through in a Brilliant Red/Grey on Black that
is quite pleasant to look at.

Jeff, The modem may not respond directly at a 14400bps speed. In order for
communication to be reliable at high speeds, error correction must be used.
The modem speed we reccomend for high speed is 19200, or if your equipment can
handle the higher speeds without error, the modem can be set for 38400 or
57600.
Make sure you lock the port speed at the selected rate.

Ron, The problem you are having may be due to an incorrectly configured modem,
comport conflicts, or interrupt conflicts. (Or any combination of those) Make
sure that your modem does not conflict with any other device such as a sound
card, mouse, serial port, scanner, CD rom, serial printer, etc. Any of these
devices may be causing an interrupt or comport conflict with your modem. What
speed are you able to log on to the BBS at? What comport and IRQ is your modem

Tom, Have you checked your flow control steeings? You should be using RTS/CTS
flow control, and have your baud rate locked. Use AT&F2 to begin your init
string This will initialize the modem with RTS/CTS flow control and some
factory defaults.
Most settings besides the init string should be the same or similar to the USR.

Com 1 ON ON OFF Com 2 OFF ON OFF Com 3 ON OFF OFF Com 4 OFF OFF
OFF
The Irq jumper will support IRQ 2-5 It should be marked with 2,3,4,5 to allow
easy setup.
If the modem uses 4 dipswitches, 3 and 4 remain off at all times.
If you still have questions, leave another message. If you would like us to fax
you the settings, leave us a fax number.

Hi! I found a 9600-bps modem that a friend was selling for $50. I doesn't have
a name on the front, but I found a magazine that had the GVC SM96V in it and it
looks just like this one with one exception, this one doesn't have GVC on the
front of it. I opened it up to find it was an SM96/A. It fits to a certain
extent, to be one of yours. Anyway, it has been upgraded to handle V.42bis. I
was just wondering, since my friend neglected the manual, if there was a file
somewhere that contained all the registers used to set the modem. I am having
trouble getting it to connect to Prodigy, as Prodigy can't support V.42bis. If
you could possibly help me in anyway, that would be great, thanks....

Welp, as with most of you guys, I've got a GVC 14.4k Fax Modem.. it's acting
strange though (it's the internal version by the way). For example, file
transfers will generally be full of errors UNLESS I choose a startup combo that
doesn't run a cacheing program (in my case SMARTDRV.EXE). This poses a problem
especially under Windows, although transfers there w/out a cache are still
pretty bad.
I'm using Qmodem Pro, and it seems to be working pretty well with the modem,
I'm getting around 1620 cps for transfers. But I can't figure out why I can't
connect with v.42bis on modems that run under Pc-Board.. my average cps on file
transfers there are around 1150, and initial connections are always bad.
Finally, it seems as if everytime I open up my computer to upgrade something,
the modem will lock up somehow.. it doesn't receive any of the init strings my
comm program sends it.. to be more specific, Telix and Procomm Plus for Windows
don't get a response while Qmodem gives me a window that says "CTS signal not
detected." Now this has happened twice, and I've SOMEHOW managed to fix it
both times although I don't know how.. I've simply taken the modem out of the
computer, examined it, and plugged it back in.. numerous times. Anyone know
what's wrong? I can't imagine it's the computer since I bought a new 486dx/66
with the GVC modem. (I used to have a 386/33 and an internal 2400 and had
similar problems).

Jonathan, The first thing you might want to do is check you modem settings.
Are you running the modem at 57600bps? What speed is the modem running under

You should make sure that your modem is using an init string that begins with
AT&F2 Be sure that RTS/CTS flow control is enabled, Disable Xon/Xoff flow
control Disable Autobaud detection
Try setting your baud rate to 19200. If you can connect without errors, or
without dropping any characters, try a faster speed.
Get the response to the following command: ATI1 Leave the response in your

That's it. Yes, I am running the modem at 57600 bps, but I've tried it at
38400 and even at 19200 and I've gotten the same results ONLY when I'm using a
cache.. but that is my chief concern, otherwise the modem works fine when the
cache is turned off. Yes, RTS/CTS is on, baud rate is locked, and XONN/XOFF is
turned off. I've done this in my comm program and using init strings, as
well.. I used the Qmodem Pro quick config. setup. Aside from the cache/windows
problem, it also does not work so well with SOME boards running PC-Board.. it's
only connecting at 14400 without v42bis or anything, making for some rather
slow transfers. Any help would be appreciated.. thanks.

_______________________________________________________________________________
To GVC technical support,
This is Keith Murison, I am calling long distance. I would like to know how
to connect a GVC 14400/v42.bis/mnp5 fax modem with a supra modem. I can
connect my GVC 14400/v42.bis/mnp5 to a USR dual standard 16.8 or 14.4 with no
problems, but when I try to connect to a supra 14.4kbps/fax/v.42bis modem they
connect but nothing happens.
With these same settings I can connect to local bbses using the extact same
model supra, but I cannot connect > 9600 over long distances.
I also tried to connect with a friend in austrailia long-distance but I could
not get a connection greater than 9600 baud. modem init string is as follows
AT%C1\J\N6\Q3\V1L1S0=0S7=60 S11=60^M and the modem is initalized to this
setting when ever the communication program begins.
I have tried to force v42bis only at/N3 or to force data only, or normal links
but they cause the modem to hang-up after trying to handshake. I was able to
test out a pc-logic or Cardinal external v.42bis modem from my house and call
my friend in Toronto and we did connect at 14400/LAPM/v42bis. The only
difference in settings between my modem and the pc-logic was that the transmit
level of the GVC was -12dBm, and the PC-logic was 0dBm..
Could the transmit level be a problem for long distance communications?
Also another friend recently bought a new GVC external modem and he said he
was able to connect long-distance with his modem. Are there any substainial
modifications to the BIOS of the new GVC modems verses the older external
modems. My modem is about 2 years old.
Any information on how to connect at higher than 9600 buad on long-distance
phone-lines would be greatly appriciated.
Also is there any way I can upgrade my bios? I have access to eprom
programmers and erasers so all I would require is the hex file.
Thank You

again perhaps the new bios has a different routine for calling long-distance
at high baud rates. My modem will not connect at > 9600 baud to a PC-Logic,
Cardinal, or Boca external or internal modem. It will not connect at > 9600 to
a Supra/v42bis/v32bis/fax external, or Trailblazer/v42bis/v32bis/fax
(austrailian modem). I can however connect locally to the supra modem without
any problems. By long distance I mean Montreal-Toronto, and
Montreal-Austrailia. With the Boca, I cannot even complete a handshake, with a
local call. With a supra it hand-shakes but does not go past that point.
On one occasion when attempting a connection from my GVC to a supra in
Toronto, using ATA and ATD on the other end while in voice, the two modems
attempted a handshake, the first attemp failed, and then the modems attempted
the handshake again, but on the second try they connected at 14400/v42bis and
14400/LAPM on the supra. I take it v42bis = v32bis connection + LAPM
compression?
Would the modem auto-fall back have falled back to 14400/v42bis connection?
Or were the modems triing the first handshake twice?
Any information on these types of problems would be most appriciated.
Keith Murison.

Buddy, The modem does not support a direct speed of 14400bps. Set you software
at 19200, or 38400. Make sure you have the RTS/CTS flow control enabled, and
the Xon/Xoff flow control and Autobaud disabled. Use the init string:
AT&F2E1L1V1&C1&D2S0=0S7=90 That string will enable the modem's flow control and
error correction. (both are necessary for high speed communication)
Why are you wishing to use X-Modem? Other protocols are much faster and much
more reliable. We reccomend using Y-Modem (batch) or Z-Modem. (if you have
them)
As for the time, there can be a lot of variation.
With Z-modem, or Y-modem, and the settings set as above, you might be able to
expect an average download of 1400cps. If that is the case, divide the total
size of the file by 1400 and that will yeild the number of SECONDS that the
download will take. (assuming minimal errors, etc.)

own. Use the string ATS0=0&W&W1 from the terminal screen. This will program
the modem, and store that program in the modem's non-volatile memory.
You might also want to check to make sure that you do not have auto-answer

The modem you have uses a 16550 UART. You should use the following setup to
insure its proper operation: Init string: AT&F2E1L1V1&C1&D2S0=0S7=90 Enable
RTS/CTS flow control. DISABLE Xon/Xoff flow control. DISABLE Autobaud. Set you

The modem hardware cannot detect whether a call is fax/data/voice. Some

interested in GVC products. We are using GVC 144FM series units also. My voice
recorder number is 313-665-9545. JACK---

Charles, You can use GVC FM144/144HV as your modem selection.
As for the problem faxing to a fax/answering machine, try inserting a few
commas (,) after the number, this might give the modem time to hear the fax
tones. Another solution might be: Call the machine yourself, using a regular
telephone. Listen to the announcement, it might say, "To send a fax, press 1
now...." Hang up. When you fax the machine again, add ,,,,,,1,,, to the
number. This will tell the modem to wait, dial 1, then wait some more before
attempting to log on to the remote fax.

Hi,
I would like to request the latest ROM version for my modem... If I try and use
the modem to receive in Adaptive Answering, the modem recognizes an incomming
data call at 2400 baud as a FAX call? At speed greater than 9600, the modem
accepts the data calls as normal?
The ROM version I have with the ATi4 is: FM-144HVBIS/R1 version 1.65
If you could please help I would greatly appreciate it... My address is as

_______________________________________________________________________________
I recently bought a GVC 14.4bps external fax modem from Direct Micro on
Compuserve. In their description they say that the modem is capable of
destinguishing between Voice/Data/Fax calls. Before I had a Frecom Fax96 with
a so called 1liner option: The setup was the following: Modem answers after 5
rings. Answer machine answers after 4 rings. If a fax call came and the answer
machine kicked in after 4 rings or somebody picked up the phone before the 5th
ring the modem would listen and recognize the fax tone and take over. If there
would not be a fax tone (voice call) the modem would ignore it and I have a
regular call. Is there a way I can setup my modem to do just this? I tried it
but if I pick up the phone before the 5th ring the modem does not recognize
data or fax calls. This feature was the main reason why I bought this modem. I
hope you can help me with that.

Wolfgang, The modem hardware cannot distinguish between voice/fax/data calls.
The Quicklink II software provided with the modem has that feature. Setup
Quicklink for AUTO DETECT. It will answer the phone anytime it rings, attempt
to log on as either a fax or data modem. If, at the end of 30 seconds, the
modem hasn't logged on as either fax or data, the software puts a VOICE CALL
message on the screen to prompt you to pick up the phone.

reached with the 16550 vart.

Eugene, It is not possible to upgrade the UART on that modem. The UARTs are
directly soldered to the modem board.
If your modem is an FM144/R1, it already has a 16550, If it is an FM144/R, it
has a 16450.

Subj: 14,400 FAX RECEIVE AND POWER
_______________________________________________________________________________
Good Morning:
I am still having some problems getting my GVC 144HV fax-modem to work
properly with my IBM PS/1 (Model 2168-56C; 486DX2-66MHz). I am using WinFax
Pro 3.0 and Telix 3.21.
My problems:
1. When I receive a fax sent at 14,400, I always get invalid data
errors. I have COMBOOSTTIME=30 and COM1BUFFER=1024. I am using the WinFax comm
driver (wfxcomm.drv). I am using After Dark 2.0 but I have made sure that it
does not monitor COM port activity. The invalid data sometimes is accompanied
by a WinFax error message that says "Unable to write to disk." Last evening I
used 4 separate FaxBack services to test the operation of the fax modem and of
8 receptions only the 14,400 reception failed (in fact, I received a 9600 baud
fax from the same source 30 minutes prior). Any suggestions?
2. This model IBM has "Rapid Resume" which means that it remembers
where it was when shut down. Unfortunately, when turned on, if WinFax was
running, the connection to the fax/modem is lost and the software won't pick up
incoming calls without being reinitiated. Any suggestions? (Might there be a
TSR that looks for this connection or some command for Power On settings for
the fax/modem?)
3. Also, since WinFax does not include any kind of voice/data/fax
switching, do you know of any software which is available to sit on top of
WinFax, for example, and be used as a voice/data/fax switch or must I use a
peripheral fax switch (like from Command Communications)?
Thanks for all your help!
Charlie Shooshan

Hello Osip,
The GVC model number is:

The modems can distiguish between fax and data.
220 VAC power supply is available for $12 extra.

Dear Mr. Mikunis,
Thank you for your inquiry. I checked with the technical department at GVC
and they confirmed that the GVC is Class 1 and 2, Group 3 and does direct your
incoming messages to the modem if the call is fax or data and direct the call
to the telephone if it is voice. I'm still waiting for the answer resgarding
the actual type of UART. But is is the 16550. The modem is FM144/144V for the
external and FM144/144HV for the Internal.

FM-144/144 modems
Hello Osip,
The GVC modems, are Class 1 Group 3, and they will not distinguish between
voice and data.
The ZyXEL modem is Class 2 and will distinguish between voice/fax/data.

Osip,
The modem HARDWARE is NOT capable of voice/fax/data detection. This feature is
implemented by Quicklink II SOFTWARE provided with the modem.
The modem is essentially class 2 compatible. In addition, eprom versions 1.68
and greater will also support class 1.
The FM144/144HV setting is for internal modems, FM144/144V for external modems.
The INTERNAL FM144HVBIS/R1 modem has a 16550 UART. The External FM144VBIS/R1
modem does not have a UART. (external modems use the uart built into your I/O
card.)
Hopefully this message answers any previous misinterpretations you might have
had.
If you have any more questions, please let us know.
