  1.                                DRAW POKER

  3.      
  4.           Poker,  known in some circles as "The Great American Game", 
  5.      actually  originated  in the United States!  It  became  popular 
  6.      among  the  Cajuns and French of New Orleans in the 1800's.   At 
  7.      that  time  they called the card game "poque",  likely from  the 
  8.      French  word  "pocher" meaning "to bluff".  As the  game  worked 
  9.      its  way  north by way of Mississippi steamboats the  name  came 
  10.      to  be known as "poker",  probably because of  mispronunciation. 
  11.      Poker  is  loosely  based on card games which date back  as  far 
  12.      as  the  fifteenth  century.  There are many  forms  of  today's 
  13.      game including Spit-in-the-Ocean,  Criss-Cross,  Michigan, Base-
  14.      ball,  High-Low,  Showdown  and  Stud.   But the most popular is 
  15.      Draw Poker.

  18.                                 THE GAME

  20.           Draw  Poker  is  played with a fifty-two  card  deck,   the 
  21.      Jokers  being  discarded.   All players "ante" an  amount  which 
  22.      has  been  previously  agreed upon.  The  dealer  shuffles  then 
  23.      five  cards each are delt to the players,  one at a time,   face 
  24.      down,   in turn to the left of the dealer.  After inspecting the 
  25.      hand  delt him,  each player to the left of the dealer  receives 
  26.      the opportunity to bet,  raise,  see, or fold. A player "sees" a 
  27.      bet by matching it,  in order to stay in the game.  After seeing 
  28.      a bet,  a player may "raise" the bet,  requiring all who wish to 
  29.      continue  to  see the raise.  Usually,  seeing and  raising  are 
  30.      combined as raising.  Those not wishing to continue,  "fold" and 
  31.      forfeit all amounts bet.  After all betting is complete and each 
  32.      remaining player has seen the last bet, each player to the left, 
  33.      in  turn from the last to see,  may discard up to five cards and 
  34.      draw  new  ones as replacements in order to better his  odds  of 
  35.      winning.    A player who discards none "stands pat".  When  each 
  36.      player  has  drawn or stood pat,  the last to see  starts a  new 
  37.      round of betting.  Play is finished when all but one player have 
  38.      folded  or when one player "calls" the bet.  The player with the 
  39.      highest hand wins the pot and becomes the dealer.

  42.                                  SCORING 
  43.      
  44.           There  are  no  points  awarded in Poker.   It  is  usually 
  45.      played  with  money or chips representing money instead.   Hands 
  46.      are valued from least to highest in order as follows:

  48.      High  Card: 
  49.      The  highest  valued  card  held wins the hand.   Deuce  is  low 
  50.      and Ace is high.  (If all cards in all hands match,  the highest 
  51.      suit  wins.  Ace of spades is high,  then Hearts,  Diamonds, and 
  52.      Clubs.  Lowest card is the two of Clubs.)

  54.      A  Single  Pair: 
  55.      The  highest  valued pair wins.  Again,  Deuce low -  Ace  high. 
  56.      To break a tie,  the next highest single card wins. 
  57.      
  58.      Two  Pair: 
  59.      The  highest  combination  wins.   In the case  of a  tie,   the 
  60.      next highest single card wins. 
  61.      
  62.      Three-of-a-kind: 
  63.      The highest threesome wins. 
  64.      
  65.      Straight: 
  66.      The  highest  five cards in sequence,  but not all of  the  same 
  67.      suit...Ace  may  be  high or low to make the sequence.   Tie  is 
  68.      broken by the highest high-card's suit.

  70.      Flush: 
  71.      The  highest five cards held in a single suit.  Ties are  broken 
  72.      as with the Straight. 
  73.      
  74.      Full  House: 
  75.      The  highest  combination of Three-of-a-kind and a  Pair.   Ties 
  76.      are broken by highest three-of-a-kind. 
  77.      
  78.      Straight  Flush: 
  79.      The  highest five cards of a single suit,  in sequence.  Tie  is 
  80.      broken by the highest suit. 
  81.      
  82.      Royal  Flush: 
  83.      Ace,    King,  Queen,  Jack and Ten of a single  suit.   Highest 
  84.      suit wins in case of a tie.

  87.                             LAS VEGAS DRAW POKER 
  88.      
  89.           Draw  Poker  as played in Las Vegas allows a draw  of  only 
  90.      three  cards  and  requires that a player have a pair  of  Jacks 
  91.      or better in his hand. Players not meeting this requirement must 
  92.      fold and forfeit their ante,  which is usually a quarter. 
  93.      
  94.           The  maximum  bet in Las Vegas Draw Poker is  usually  five 
  95.      dollars.    Raises  may  be considered as bets  or  may  not  be 
  96.      specified, depending on the house. Most casinos allow only three 
  97.      raises. Some, however, allow five before the player in turn must 
  98.      see,  call or fold.

  106.                            COMPUTER DRAW POKER 
  107.      
  108.           The  computer  game  is  played as  Five  Card  Draw  Poker 
  109.      with  no  requirements for opening bet and no limit.   Both  the 
  110.      player  and  the computer start with 1000 "chips".   Each  antes 
  111.      one chip  before  cards are dealt.  Three raises per  round  are 
  112.      allowed in the computer version of the game.

  114.           This  game  is  designed to allow the computer  to  act  as 
  115.      both  tutor  and player.  It does not look at your hand to  make 
  116.      playing  descisions  and  doesn't  remember  any  of  the  cards 
  117.      in  your  hand  when it does check them.  It  checks  your  hand 
  118.      only  to  see  that  you are playing the  game  properly.   When 
  119.      you are in a rule-breaking situation,  it will display a message 
  120.      to  help  you  to get it right.  It also  displays  messages  to 
  121.      direct you when to bet,  see,  raise,  call,  fold,  discard and 
  122.      draw.    The computer plays with a certain degree  of  sophistry 
  123.      and will bet high or low,  as well as bluff, at random. When you 
  124.      can  consistently  beat  the  computer you are  playing  with  a 
  125.      good deal of skill.
