1. WE WILL BE MOVING ON SEP 30, 1992.
Effective on this date, our new address will be:
Rick Hillier
98 Toynbee Crescent
Kitchener, ON
Canada N2N 1R9
We do not know the new numbers for telephone support and The Shareware
Connection BBS yet, but we will post them online (on the bbs) when they
become available. We would imagine that Bell Canada will maintain a
number-change notice for a period of time after the move.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. EXTRACTING THE CATDISK PROGRAM FILES AND DOCUMENTATION
As CATDISK has evolved during its development, it has grown in size and all of
the programs and documentation no longer fit on a 360K floppy disk. The
program files are provided in a self-extracting LHA archive file called
CATPROGS.EXE and the documentation is in a similar file called CATDOCS.EXE.
If you are running on low density 360K 5.25" floppy disks, do the following:
1) Put the CATDISK distribution disk in drive B:
2) Put a blank, formatted disk in drive A:
3) Log onto Drive A:
4) Type "B:CATPROGS" <Enter> (without the quotes, of course).
5) The program files will be uncompressed to the blank disk in A:
6) Remove that diskette and label it "CATDISK PROGRAM FILES."
7) Insert another blank diskette and type "B:CATDOCS" <Enter>.
8) The documentation files will be decompressed to the blank disk in A:
9) Copy the file README.1ST to the disk in A:
10) Remove that diskette and label it "CATDISK DOCUMENTATION FILES."
If you are running on low density 720K 3.5" floppy disks, do the following:
1) Put the CATDISK distribution disk in drive B:
2) Put a blank, formatted disk in drive A:
3) Log onto Drive A:
4) Type "B:CATPROGS" <Enter> (without the quotes, of course).
5) The program files will be uncompressed to the blank disk in A:
6) Now enter the command "B:CATDOCS" <Enter>.
7) The documentation files will be decompressed to the blank disk in A:
8) Copy the file README.1ST to the disk in A:
9) Remove the diskette and label it "CATDISK PROGRAM FILES & DOCUMENTATION."
All other forms of disk should have enough capacity to accept all of the
files. Simply execute CATPROGS.EXE and CATDOCS.EXE from the directory in which
the two files reside delete CATPROGS.EXE and CATDOCS.EXE after each is
completed.
You may then proceed with setting up CATDISK for operation as described in the
user manual.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. IMPORTANT: UPGRADING YOUR CATALOG FILES TO THIS VERSION.
Prior To V2.10
--------------
As there is now more information being stored in the summary file, you will
have to discard your old catalog files and start from scratch. Any .SUM files
created with CATDISK versions before V2.10 are NOT compatible with this one.
Upgrading From V2.10 to V6.21
-----------------------------
This release of CATDISK supports file comments of 43 characters in length.
You do *NOT* have to purge your old catalog files and start over... just run
the program CDISKCVT.EXE on each catalog file that you have, select the
appropriate conversion option as outlined in the program and it will be
converted to the new format.
The syntax of this command is:
CDISKCVT catalog_name
- where catalog_name is the name of the catalog file to be converted.
(do NOT include the filename extension of .DTA on the command line)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. IF YOU ARE UPGRADING TO THIS RELEASE FROM V3.61 OR LATER
Before copying the new program files to your work disk, you might want to
rename the executable file from the previous installation (CATDISK.COM or
CATDISK.EXE) to another name. The new configuration utility, CDISKCFG.EXE
now has the ability to read the configuration information from the release that
you were using for easy installation into this release. This can save you some
time in setting the program up for your preferences, particularly if you've
customized all the screen colors.
When you run CDISKCFG, hit <F8> and follow the prompts.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. POSSIBLE INCOMPATIBILITY BETWEEN CATDISK AND 4DOS
In the past, we have received reports of problems occurring with CATDISK and
DISKFILL when running under 4DOS when using its disk-based swapping mode (see
the 4DOS user manual for details on its swapping feature). Examples of these
anomalies are complete system crashes when exiting from CATDISK, system
malfunction at the command line (i.e. "C:>" prompt), system lockups when
DISKFILL calls upon CATDISK to catalog a disk, you finish that procedure and
return back to DISKFILL, and other random problems.
As far as our testing shows, the problem seems to be in 4DOS itself, as these
problems only seem to occur under the above mentioned circumstance.
You can make the annoyance go away by instructing 4DOS to use either EXPANDED
or EXTENDED memory for swapping, by disabling 4DOS's swapping feature (again,
see the 4DOS user manual for details on how to do this), or by using the
"COMMAND.COM" command interpreter that comes with DOS.
NOTE THAT YOUR FILES AND OTHER INFORMATION ON YOUR DISK ARE NOT IN JEOPARDY AS
A RESULT OF THESE PROBLEMS.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. CATDISK PLUS UPDATE
Due to the popularity that CATDISK has achieved, and the resulting workload in
keeping up with correspondence, the development of CATDISK PLUS has been
significantly delayed. Work is progressing, albeit slowly, as we adapt to
the increased workload. Additionally, as development progresses, new ideas
pop up that are too good to pass up, both on the shareware version of CATDISK,
as
