Summary Description:
-------------------
DF 4.00: Small, fast directory manager with advanced user-defined functions
such as SmartViewers. Move and copy files, delete and rename files and
directories, create archives, change file time/date stamps, create archive
files, and much more. Yet the program is less than 20KBytes in size!
Ideal for both the latest 80486 desktop system and the most venerable
laptop, Directory Freedom addresses the needs of both the novice unsure
about cryptic DOS commands and the experienced user who just wants to avoid
typing in whole lists of filenames.
Feature Summary:
----------------
Directory Freedom 4.0 offers users a fast, compact alternative to DOS
Shells and a wide range of features including:
A scrollable environment for examining files and directories
Selective file and directory operations such as Copy/Move file;
Rename/Delete file or directory; Change file/directory
attribute; Create directory
User-defined keys which can operate upon highlighted
files (such as defined editors)
SmartViewers which call different user-defined viewers depending on
the highlighted file's extension
Archive (e.g. .ZIP) creation
File date/time modification
Volume label editing
Support for extended screen modes (e.g. 43/50 line)
Extensive configuration through an external, user-friendly
configuration program
There are many DOS shells on the market, but DF small and fast. Yet at
the same time, DF is powerful and highly configurable. DF lets you
continue to use the utilities (such as file viewers) which you have become
comfortable with but it ENHANCES those utilities by providing a scrollable
environment from which they can be called.

Hardware Requirements and Important Information:
------------------------------------------------
Directory Freedom does not require any special hardware to operate. It has
been tested across a wide range of IBM compatible hardware. Graphics cards
and hard disks are NOT needed to use this program.
128KB memory is required. When shelled to a user-defined function, DF
requires 64KB for its resident portion. Thus, in order to run a program in
a shell, the user must have memory equal to the shelled program's
requirements + 64KB.
DF will function with DOS 2.1 and later. However, some functions (such as
Create Directory and Edit Volume Name) require DOS 3.1 or later. In
general, we recommend DOS 3.3 as the minimum revision if possible.
To run DF, you must set the DOS COMSPEC variable (e.g. SET
COMSPEC=c:\command.com). This requirement is discussed in detail in the
manual.
Directory Freedom is a shareware program. If you use DF and find it
useful, registration with the author is required. Please see the ORDER.FRM
file for more information on registering.
What's New with DF 4.00:
-----------------------
The following list is broken into the following categories: Enhancements,
features (sometimes impolitely called bugs <ahem>) fixes, changes to
DFCONFIG, and miscellaneous administrative changes. I'd point out here
that there were MANY changes made to DF and I may not have every last
change and fix listed here, though I've tried to catch everything of
significance.
(Previous users may also notice some changes to the key operations in
the data entry screens and to the mouse support in DFCONFIG. These are a
consequence of changes to the code library used for these screens and are
something over which I have no control for the time being.)
DF Enhancements:
----------------
o Time / Date change functions added (current or user-entered)
o Switch added to user-defined commands which allows for multiple
sequential execution against multiple files
o Mouse cursor emulation integrated (DFM no longer needed)
o Command line (and Change Directory) now accept a wildcard file mask
o Significantly improved critical error handling
o Personics Ultravision compatibility
o Edit Volume Name function
o Print directory function
o Minor changes to the display -- primarily to improve readability on
monochrome systems
o Right-Shift Menu added for additional user-defined keys
o SmartViewers added -- Viewing a file (<Enter>) runs a user-defined
program as a function of the file extension
o Menu displays dynamically change from Alt to LShift depending upon the
Secondary Menu key defined
o User-defined Create Archive function added
o Option to disable viewing of user-defined attributes (e.g. Hidden)
o 25 line and 43/50 line display toggle added
o Various changes made to the shell routines (including File Control
Block support). This should increase shell reliability with an
even greater range of programs.
o On-line help
o Confirm of Moves/Copies of multiple marked files to other than a
directory
o Autosense for extended keyboards
o Second menu color
o Destination <- Source and Source <- Destination directory
change functions
o Separate program (ZIPVIEW [ZV]) written to allow the viewing of text
files within ZIP files. This is a separate program, but fits well
with DF's new SmartViewers.
DF Bug Fixes:
-------------
o Expanded user-defined command lines were being truncated at 43
characters (actually fixed in DF350B, but this was not a general
release)
o Problem with deleting default destination directory finally fixed.
Related problem caused by deleting the startup directory also fixed
o Problem with sort routine in some long directory sorts corrected
o Some continuing problems with the Alt-F7 (Directory Size) function
corrected
o Various changes made to memory sensing so program doesn't run if there
isn't enough memory (and vice versa)
o Grey<Enter> key now works properly when extended keyboard enabled
o Command line critical errors are now handled properly
o Refresh on empty disk no longer causes a hang
o Volume label display bug fixed (not all volume labels were displayed
correctly)
o Fixed bug which caused unnecessary destination directory access when
Vefify On Floppy Write was set
DFCONFIG changes:
-----------------
Note: In addition to the changes explicitly listed here, many others were
made to support features explicitly listed above and are not repeated in
this section.
o Rewritten for TCXL 5.51 libraries
o Critical error handler added
o Improved display for monochrome monitors
o Ultravision compatibility
o Ability to read in settings from older DF (4.0 and later) files. This
doesn't do much for yo
