  2. We are glad to release this Kannada Editor for public use.
  3.  
  4. This editor is respectfully dedicated to Shri Sediyapu Krishna Bhat,
  5. to convey my appreciation of his work that he continues to do
  6. inspite of his illness and advanced age.

  8. This editor allows easy entering of Kannada into your IBM compatible
  9. computer. You can also take a print out on a dot matrix printer.

  12. Use key f4 to change between English and Kannada.
  13. Use key f10 to get the menu. You may use tab key to advance
  14. to next item and select by pressing the space bar.

  17. About the key board.
  18. You may enter text almost in transliterated English. This allows
  19. easy learning of the lay-out. 
  20. The short consonant form is assumed. Hence if you have to enter
  21. ka- short you need enter k. The other vowel modifiers are in their
  22. places and can modify the consonant. The combinations of k as
  23. an example follow:
  24. k -k
  25. ka- ka
  26. ki-ki
  27. kI-kI
  28. ku-ku
  29. kU-kU
  30. k]-k]
  31. ke-ke
  32. kE-kE
  33. kY-kY
  34. ko-ko
  35. kO-kO
  36. kV-kV
  37. kM-kM
  38. kH-kH
  39. and so on. Obviously k replaced with g or r will lead to their
  40. appropriate combinations.

  42. Generally the aspirates are in the corresponding shift positions. 
  43. ie G at G, K at K etc.

  45. Exceptions to the rule 1.1 are
  46. q,Q,w,W,[,{,z,Z,x and M,H,Y,V.
  47. The corresponding Kannada characters are q,Q,w,W,[,{,z,Z,x.
  48. MHYV are already talked about in section 1.0
  49. R leads to arkavottu the special consonant matra of Kannada.

  51. No separate vowel keys are provided. In Kannada a vowel never
  52. occurs immediately after a consonant. Hence the same modifier
  53. keys as described in section 1.0 print vowels when not preceded
  54. by consonants.
  55. a,A,i,I,u,U,],e,E,Y,o,O,V give rise to
  56. ",A,#,*,$,',%,-,/,^,<,>,\.

  58. Subscripted consonants - Joined characters :
  59. The key f links any two consonants, hence kfk would lead to k&k.

  61. The editor is basically phonetic, hence kfro would lead to k&ro.
  62. 1.6
  63. The rule 1.5 also has an exception that is R. Learn to use this with 
  64. care.

  66. The editor is reasonably intelligent and does not allow any improper
  67. combinations. Hence it will not allow a free standing subscripted
  68. character. So also characters corresponding to R,M,H and the modifiers
  69. corresponding to a,e etc.

  71. Some combinations of characters have been used though not quite
  72. correct. We have provided for them too in a tricky way.
  73. A&y  - a combination used by a Kannada Dictionary is input as Afy
  74. mo` Φ an incorrect combination is input as mo`
  75. deR_ Φ  ................do................as deR~
  76. k┘# Φ combination of other languages as k^i.

  79. Key Board Short Cuts.
  80. Control q and control s are for quitting and saving files.
  81. F4 Change language.
  82. F7-F8 are for beginning and ending blocks.
  83. F-10 is for menu.

  86. Other software such as prokey, superkey etc work merrily with
  87. our editor.

  90. Our editor supports the mouse. Make sure the mouse driver is run
  91. before invoking the editor.

  94. For advanced users:

  96. The text is saved in a semi phonetic style in the file when saved.
  97. It has a 24 character header and almost the same keys you enter are
  98. recorded. The main difference is the vowels which had to be located
  99. elsewhere, the link now replaced by the & and ofcourse the q,Q,w,W.
  100. Control C - 03 is used as the change language symbol and 
  101. 0D - for carriage return and line feed.

  103. The keyboard lay-out is easily changed to suit ones convenience.
  104. The file Kann.kmp need be edited in any ascii editor.
  105. Change the output key designation to change layout.

  107. The files created in this editor have been transfered on networks
  108. and on telex lines without any problem.
  109. It may not be difficult for someone to write a sorting program.
