----- I. LHX ATTACK CHOPPER Special Review Disk -----
U.S. Military Aviation will enter the 21st Century with the LHX: Light
Helicopter Experimental. You can fly the LHX on an exciting desert attack
mission today! The LHX advanced scout helicopter design specifications
include twin turboshaft engines; four-bladed rotorblade system; tailfan
technology (no tail rotor); composite airframe components; stealth-like
capabilities; and 150 knot cruise airspeed. This disk offers only a sample of
the full program, allowing you to fly one helicopter and one mission. In the
full program, LHX ATTACK CHOPPER, you can choose from four different aircraft
and attempt hundreds of different missions! LHX ATTACK CHOPPER is available
for purchase from Softdisk Publishing, Inc.
This documentation is keyboard oriented; mouse and joystick users may
have to modify some of the commands. Most of the features of LHX ATTACK
CHOPPER are covered; however, some functions have been omitted due to space
limitations. Softdisk Publishing, Inc. has simplified the documentation to
make LHX ATTACK CHOPPER easy to use as a special service to our subscribers.

Press 5 to attain 100% power for takeoff. After you have
attained approximately 100 feet of altitude, push the nose forward
with the FORWARD ARROW KEY and raise the landing gear by
pressing G .
C. Straight and Level Flight
Establish cruise power, 50% power, by pressing 3 . With a
50% power setting, gear up, and level attitude (constant airspeed
and altitude), adjust your flight attitude until the airspeed
(upper left-hand section of the cockpit window) and airspeed
(center right-hand section of the cockpit window) are constant.
D. Turns
Press the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW KEYS . The more you press
the ARROW KEYS , the steeper the turn.
E. Descents
Make power adjustments, not attitude adjustments.
Press 6 for a 10% power reduction. Press 6 twice for a 20%
power reduction. The aircraft will descend. When you reach the
desired altitude, press 3 for 50% power and attain straight and
level flight using the ARROW KEYS .
F. Climbs
Press 7 for 10% power increases. The more power increases
(the number of times you press 7 ), the faster the climb. Upon
reaching the desired altitude, press 3 for 50% power and attain
straight and level flight.
G. Navigation
Finding targets, waypoints, and destinations is accomplished
by turning the aircraft with the ARROW KEYS until the ^^ under
the compass (top center of the cockpit window) is centered. To
confirm the aircraft is headed in the proper direction, crosscheck
the information on the "NAV STATUS" screen (lower center of the
instrument panel). The object of LHX ATTACK CHOPPER is to
navigate to a target, destroy the target, and navigate to a
friendly base for debriefing. The enemy will attempt to destroy
you the entire time.
H. Selecting and Firing Weapons
First select a target with the ENTER key. A box will appear over
the target on the cockpit window. Press either [ or ] to select
weapon. To fire your weapons, press the SPACE BAR . The weapon
system in use and number of rounds/missiles remaining are displayed on
the left center of the screen.
I. Landing
Slowly decrease power and raise the nose in order to maintain
a safe altitude. As the aircraft slows down, lower the gear by
pressing G . As the airspeed approaches 0, decrease power (use
the 6 key) and establish a hover attitude with the ARROW KEYS .
After you have brought the aircraft to hover, make a 10% decrease
in power (use the 6 key) to initiate descent. Maintain a level
attitude during final descent and the aircraft will touch safely.

----- V. Features -----
A. Flight Menu Options
Drop-Down Menus are available to change various aspects of
the simulation. Active options have check marks next to them;
some options can be selected with a keyboard command during a
mission. There are five Drop-Down Menus:
1. Help
2. Sound
3. Control
4. View
5. Sim (Simulation)
To make a selection:
1. Press ESC to display the Drop-Down Menus.
2. Press the --> or <-- cursor keys to display each
of the five menus.
3. Press the UP or DOWN cursor keys to highlight the
option you want to select.
4. Press ENTER to select an option.
B. Head Up Display
The Head Up Display (HUD) illuminates vital information in
the pilots forward field of vision. The pilot does not have to
constantly look inside to cockpit for flight data. He can keep
his "head up" and concentrate on the critical elements of the
flight such as navigation, obstructions, weather, and enemy
activity. HUD information for the LHX is shown on the cockpit
window: the upper half of the CRT. The LHX HUD contains the
following:
1. Speed and Power data: upper left
2. Vertical Speed Indicator: center left
3. Weapons Systems: lower left
4. Compass: top center
5. Altimeter: center right
6. Camera Zoom Magnification: lower right
C. Multi-Function Display
The Multi-Function Display (MFD) includes the three large
screens in the lower half of the CRT. The three screens are:
1. *Weapon Status* ("A" screen): In addition to the
weapons panel, data on the engine, flight parameters, and
damage assessment are available by pressing A . CTRL-A
allows you to choose the data which appears on this screen.
2. *Nav Status* ("S" screen): In addition to navigation
panel, the tracking camera picture is displayed on this
screen. Press S to change data on the screen. CTRL-S
allows you to choose the data which appears on this screen.
3. Radar Screen ("D" screen): position of hostile enemy
tanks, missiles, aircraft, personnel, fortifications, and gun
emplacements. Press D to change data on the screen.
CTRL-D allows you to choose the data which appears on this
screen.
In addition to the three MFD screens, there is an Electronic
Countermeasure (ECM) Panel in the lower lefthand corner of the
CRT. The ECM Panel contains Radar (RD) and Infrared (IR) data. A
vertical line illuminates when your radar or infrared jammers are
operating. When enemy radar or infrared devices are tracking or
searching for your aircraft, lights on the ECM Panel illuminate.
D. Navigation
A list of waypoints is available on the *Nav Status* screen on the
MFD. The highlighted waypoint is your first destination. After you
attack the desert outpost, the navigation information for the return
flight will be highlighted. Beneath the waypoint name is the distance
and bearing to a waypoint. The direction to turn to get on course is
shown in degrees positive (turn to the right to get on course) and
degrees negative (turn to the left).
There are two ways to confirm you are heading to your
destination:
1. The bearing on the *Nav Status* Screen is 0.
2. The ^^ symbol under the compass on the HUD is
centered.
Distances to waypoints are given in miles. At distances of
less than a mile, range is displayed in feet.
E. Weapon Targeting and Firing
Select weapon systems by pressing [ or ] . The selected
weapon system appears in the lower left corner of the HUD. The
Chain Gun has 2000 rounds. The missile systems have tracking
devices.
To track a target, press ENTER to track the first available
target on the left. Repeatedly pressing ENTER cycles through
all the available targets from left to right. Then the tracking
starts over again from the left. " ' " selects the target
closest to the aiming crosshairs. When you are tracking a target,
a square appears over the target on your HUD. You can only track
targets located in your field of vision.
A target tracking camera displays a picture of the target in
the center MFD screen. The picture of the target contains the
targets distance, bearing, and actions. When the target is
acquired and locked, a missile can be fired at the target.
The Sidewinder missiles will track to the target without
guidance after launch. Hellfires require you to maintain target
lock until missile impact. Press F10 for a view from the missile
in flight.
F. Countermeasures
When the enemy sights your aircraft, the Search light
illuminates on the ECM Panel. The search can be either Radar (RD)
of infrared (IR).
If the enemy is tracking your aircraft, the Tracking light
illuminates. Again, you are informed if the search is radar or
infrared.
Turn on your jammers to scramble the target lock by pressing
I for the infrared jammers or R for the radar jammers. A
vertical line will illuminate in the ECM Panel to show the jammers
are operating.
When the enemy fires a guided missile, the appropriate
Guidance light comes on for radar or infrared. An audio warning
is also issued. If there is a radar lock, dump chaff by pressing
C . Chaff will disrupt the enemy radar by distracting the
missile. If the lock is infrared, drop flares by pressing F .
The enemy weapon system should seek the heat signatures of the
flares, not your aircraft.
G. Cockpit View Angle and View Perspective
To change the view from the cockpit, hold down the CTRL key
and press the appropriate ARROW KEY on the numeric keypad.
Pressing just the ARROW KEYS will change the view if you are
using a mouse. By using various view angles, you can see in
different directions, spot hostile aircraft, or target enemy
positions.
There is also a variety view perspectives which are activated
with FUNCTION KEYS . The View Menu has 14 different choices
along with the proper keystrokes to select those views.
----- VI. Complete Mission -----
LHX ATTACK CHOPPER begins with a graphic presentation of the LHX.
You can skip this screen by pressing ENTER .
A. Mission Procedures
Mission Procedures will be presented following the
introductory graphics. Read and review these procedures. Press
Enter to continue.
B. Weapon System Selection and Loading
A list of weapon systems will appear next. Press the UP or
DOWN ARROW KEYS to highlight the desired weapon system. Press
the SPACEBAR to select the weapon system you want to use.
Select the best combination of weapons to accomplish the mission.
Press ENTER to continue.
C. Waypoint Map
A map of important targets, landmarks, and waypoints is shown
next. You must have an accurate picture of the route of flight to
complete the mission! It is important to end your mission at the
last waypoint so you can be debriefed. Press ENTER to continue.
D. Begin the Mission
The mission will commence after you have reviewed the map and
pressed ENTER .
E. Debriefing
After you have attacked the desert outpost and landed at the
destination airport, the mission ends. You are returned to the
ready room for debriefing.
