WELCOME TO FIREPOWER !
There are three modes of play
in FIREPOWER. You have just chosen:
PLAY BY MODEM
In this mode of FIREPOWER the
adversary is another person using a
separate computer. Both computers
must be connected by modem.
Communication via modem can be over
the telephone lines or the modems
can be directly connected. The
playing screen is divided into two
parts, one side will show the viewing
screen and the STATUS WINDOW, and the
other side will show the modem screen
and its controls. Soon after reading
these instructions, a tank selection
screen will appear. There are three
tanks to choose from. Each has its own
advantages and disadvantages. View
the individual tanks by pressing the
joystick to the left, center or right.
Make a selection by pressing the fire
button down while the tank desired is
being shown. Both players must select
a tank before the game will begin.
KEYPAD CONTROL
Similar to joystick control except
that the number keys (4-6) on the keypad
are used to view the individual tanks.
Make a selection by pressing the INS
key on the keypad down while the tank
desired is being shown.
KEYBOARD CONTROL
Tank selection using the keyboard
keys is not available in the play by
modem game.
GAME PLAY
The goal of FIREPOWER is to
find the enemy's flag and return it
to ones home base. The game begins with
the tank sitting in a garage at its
home base. Driving forward causes the
tank to come out of the garage and
become visible. (See TANK CONTROL.)
If a tank remains stationary for too
long the enemy will locate it and
attack with helicopters. It is possible
for the tank to get stuck while driving
through rubble or other things
projecting from the ground. Movement
in the opposite direction usually
solves this problem.
STATUS WINDOW
SCORE: Points are gained by
destroying enemy tanks, helicopters,
men and fortresses. Points are also
gained by saving friendly men and
returning them to a First-Aid station
(marked with a red cross.)
MINES: Mines are symbolized in
the STATUS WINDOW by a circular disk
with a diagonal stripe. The number off
to the right indicates the number of
mines still remaining in the tank.
One additional mine is obtained for
each multiple of five men that are
rescued and returned to a friendly
First-Aid Station. (See MINE LAYING
for additional information.)
MEN: The number in this window
indicates the number of men aboard
the tank. Men are picked up by having
the tank at a complete stop when the
men run up to the tank; if the tank
is moving, the men will be killed.
After a tank has taken on the maximum
number of men, no more men will run
up to the tank. Men are unloaded by
stopping on the right side of a
friendly First-Aid Station (marked
with a cross.) The men will
automatically leave the tank and run
into the station.
FUEL: Each tank starts with a
full load of fuel. Fuel is consumed
as the tank drives from place to place.
Additional fuel is acquired by returning
to the home base or by finding and
destroying an enemy fuel depot (a large
dome diagonally connected to a smaller
dome.) Tanks which run out of fuel
explode, preventing the enemy from
obtaining and using abandoned tanks.
RADAR: The radar is the large
black square in the status window.
The dot in the center is the tank
you control. Friendly and enemy
helicopters, tanks, home bases or
flags that are close enough to your
tank will also appear on the radar.
TANK CONTROL
Tank control in FIREPOWER
is absolute. To drive the tank to
left, just push the joystick to the
left and hold it there. If the
tank is facing left, and backwards
movement is desired, just push the
joystick to the right (in the
opposite direction.)
KEYPAD CONTROL
Similar to joystick control except
that the number keys (1-9) on the keypad
are used to control tank movement.
KEYBOARD CONTROL
Tank movement using the keyboard
keys is not available in the play by
modem game.
TANK FIRING
One of the two fire buttons on the
joystick is used exclusively to shoot
from the tank. To shoot from the tank
just press the correct fire button
down and hold it there.
KEYPAD CONTROL
Pressing the INS key on the keypad
causes the tank to fire.
MINE LAYING
One of the two fire buttons on the
joystick is used exclusively to lay
mines. To lay a mine, bring the tank
to a complete stop, press the correct
fire button down and hold it there
(briefly), then release the fire button
and move away. Beware! Mines are
proximity mines and explode whenever
either tank passes too close. One
additional mine is obtained for each
multiple of five men that are rescued
and returned to a friendly
First-Aid Station.
KEYPAD CONTROL
Pressing the . DEL key on the
keypad lays a mine.
MISC CONTROLS
CONTROL P
Pause / unpause the game.
CONTROL S
Toggle the sound on/off.
F10
Abort the game in progress. The
game is stopped and the results are
printed.
GAME SPEED
Firepower begins running at the
maximum speed offered by the
computer. (Delay rate begins at 0.)
- key on keypad
Speed the game up. Pressing this
key decrements the current delay
rate (mimimum delay of 0) and causes
the delay rate to be printed at the
top of the radar box.
+ key on keypad
Slow the game up. Pressing this
key increments the current delay
rate (maximum delay of 99) and
causes the delay rate to be printed
at the top of the radar box.
MODEM CONTROL
The modem mode is designed for
use with Hayes 1200 baud compatible
modems only, and is not guaranteed
to work with modems that are not
Hayes compatible.
After reading these instructions
the modem mode game will begin running.
One side of the screen will be set up
for the tank, the other side for the
modem control. After connection has
been made, the modem side of the screen
will echo most key presses made by
either player. Therefore, messages may
may be typed in by either player during
the game. Along the bottom of the modem
side of the screen will be a control
panel. Controls are selected by using
the arrow keys to move the X to the
desired box and then pressing the ins
key. Controls are as follows:
#: Type in the telephone number.
CALL: Call the telephone number typed
in the box marked a #.
PLAY: Start the game.
H-UP: Send the ATH0 command to the
modem (to hang up.)
For further information consult a
modem user's manual.
SUGGESTION
It is suggested that the one or
two player games be played first in
in order to give you a feeling for
FIREPOWER.
HINTS
1. After laying a mine move the tank
away. A new mine becomes active
shortly after it is dropped.
2. Gun turrets at fortress locations
have only eight firing positions.
The turrets can fire only at 45
degree angles and multiples thereof.
This liability can be exploited by
attacking at odd angles. In
addition, if the flag has not been
captured, enemy turrets will not
usually shoot in any direction that
might damage other parts of its own
fortress. Thus, if an attacking
tank is well positioned, enemy
turrets will not fire at it if it
is in close proximity to other
vulnerable parts of its fortress.
