(After playing a game of Flasher, 3 files will be created:
1] FLASH2_1.CFG -- This is a configure file. --
This saves the settings that you had
when you last played, this way you do
not have to keep setting the options
each time you play.
2] FLASHER.NHS -- The normal highscores file. --
This is the file where the
highscores are saved for a normal
game.
3] FLASHER.PHS -- The phase highscores file. --
This is the file where the
highscores are saved for a phase
game.
*** How To Play ***
Flasher II is an addictive and challenging game designed
to test your memory. Simply repeat an ever-increasing
sequence of colors in order to score points.
At the Flasher directory, type FLASHER2 to begin the game.
The program will check for a VGA card, mouse, and soundcard
card. If your system does not have a VGA card or mouse, the
program will exit you back to DOS. If your system does not
have a soundcard, your sound options will be limited to the
PC speaker. Flasher II uses the FM chip which is located in
the same memory location on most (if not all) soundcards, so
if you have one, it should find it. (Hey, it works on MY
SoundBlaster...).
Once all this is done, you will be prompted to click the mouse
button to being the game. IT IS HIGHLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU RUN
THIS GAME FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE. RUNNING IT OFF OF A FLOPPY DISK
WILL TAKE A BIT LONGER WHILE THE PROGRAM READS THE DATA FILE.
However, all data is read into memory prior to the start of the
game, so once it is done, game speed is not affected not matter
where you run it from.
The mouse is used to make your selections as well as flipping
through the intro screens. After the Caledonian Enterprises
logo fades out, the title screen will appear and a few colors
will be flashed. Click the left mouse button to go through
the other screens until you reach the main menu.
*** Main Menu ***
The main menu screen consists of 5 options:
PLAY GAME - Clicking this button will take you to the game
options menu (See Option Menu).
INSTRUCTIONS - Clicking this button will take you to the
instruction screens. There are 15 pages of
instructions explaining how to play the game, as
well as explaining the option settings.
REGISTRATION - Clicking this button will take you to the
registration screen. Simple enough.
HIGH SCORES - Clicking this button takes you to two screens.
The first screen shows the highscores for the
normal game. Click the left mouse button to see
the highscores for the phase game.
QUIT - This is easy enough to figure out, click this button
to exit the game.
*** Option Menu ***
The Option Menu consists of 7 options:
LEVEL - This option sets the level of difficulty for the game.
There are three levels:
HARD - This causes the game to increase the sequence
of colors flashed by 3 colors at a time. You
receive 300 points for each correct response.
(Registered users only!)
MEDIUM - This causes the game to increase the sequence
of colors flashed by 2 colors at a time. You
receive 200 points for each correct response.
(Registered users only!)
EASY - This causes the game to increase the sequence of
colors flashed by 1 color at a time. You receive
100 points for each correct response.
PLAYERS - This option sets the number of players in the game.
VARIANT - This option consists of 2 choices.
NORMAL - This option sets the game to 'normal' mode.
Normal mode basically sets the game to flashing
an ever-increasing sequence of colors.
PHASE - This option turns the game into more of a
challenge. You are forced to clear levels of
of increasing difficulty and longer sequences.
(Registered Users only!)
SOUND - There are 5 sound options here:
PC - This option plays sound out of the PC Speaker.
SH - Shhhh.... This turns off the sound in the game.
I - (Soundcard users only) Sets the sound to
Stereo Sound I.
II - (Soundcard users only) Sets the sound to
Stereo Sound II. (Registered Users only!)
III - (Soundcard users only) Sets the sound to
Stereo Sound III. (Registered Users only!)
SPEED - There are 3 speed settings for the game. Select 1
for fast, 2 for normal, 3 for slow.
START - Click this to begin playing Flasher II. (See The
Game Screen)
MAIN MENU - Click this to go back to the Main Menu.
*** The Game Screen ***
Selecting START from the Option Menu will take you to the
game screen. Each game lasts for 3 rounds. The Round
indicator will increment on each round. There will be a
window on your screen which will read "PLAYER ONE (Click to
Start)". Click your left mouse button to begin the game.
The Status indicator will read "PAUSE" as it gets a new color or
colors, depending on which level of difficulty you selected.
Once done, it will display "WAIT" while it flashes the colors.
When it reads "READY", you may begin to type in your response.
The active keys are 1,2,3,4, and ESC. The keys are in the same
order as the colors on the screen:
BLUE = 1 RED = 2 YELLOW = 3 GREEN = 4
Pressing ESC will cause a window to pop up asking you if you
wish to exit the game.
EXAMPLE:
You are playing an EASY game (One color at a time).
Red flashes on the screen.
You press '2'. (Remember: RED = 2)
You are correct and recieve 100 points.
Then, red flashes again along with green.
You press '2', then '4'. (RED = 2 GREEN = 4)
Once again you are correct and recieve 200 more points (100
points for each right response) for a total of 300 points.
This will continue until you give a wrong response.
