  1. The Virtual Hymnal was developed for use in the Windows 32-bit operating 
  2. environment (i.e. Windows95).
  3.  
  4. It will operate under standard Windows or Windows for Workgroups systems, 
  5. but in order to do so, the Microsoft 32-bit extensions (win32s) *must* 
  6. be installed in the Windows operating system, and it must be version 
  7. 1.30.172.0 or greater.
  8.  
  9. The win32s extensions are available for downloading from Microsoft at no 
  10. charge (see WIN32S AVAILABILITY AND SUPPORT below). Please be aware that 
  11. the developers and publishers of the Virtual Hymnal product cannot provide 
  12. technical support regarding the acquisition, installation, or operation 
  13. of the win32s product.

  16. BASIC INFORMATION REGARDING WIN32S:

  18. Win32s is a set of DLLs and a virtual device driver (VxD) that allows 
  19. Win32-based applications to run on top of Windows or Windows for 
  20. Workgroups. If you receive the following error message when you run or 
  21. install a Win32-based application
  22.  
  23.    This program cannot be run in DOS mode
  24.  
  25. Win32s is either not installed or not installed properly.
  26.  
  27. You can use Freecell to test your installation of Win32s.

  30. WIN32S AVAILABILITY AND SUPPORT:

  32. Win32s is available from many sources. Microsoft Personal Operating 
  33. System Support Engineers support the installation of Win32s when it is 
  34. obtained from any of the following sources:

  36. You can find PW1118.EXE, a self-extracting file, on the following 
  37. services:

  39. Microsoft's World Wide Web Site on the Internet

  41.   On the www.microsoft.com home page, click the Support icon.  
  42.   Click Knowledge Base, and select the product.   
  43.   Enter kbfile PW1118.EXE, and click GO!   
  44.   Open the article, and click the button to download the file.

  66. TO DETERMINE THE VERSION NUMBER OF AN EXISTING WIN32S INSTALLATION:

  68. Use one of the following two methods to determine interactively which 
  69. version of Win32s is installed:
  70.  
  71. 1.Check the WIN32S.INI file in your Windows system directory. The 
  72. Version entry contains the major version and the build number 
  73. (m.mm.bbb.b). This entry should be modified by any Win32-based 
  74. application which installs a later version of Win32s on your Windows 
  75. machine.
  76.  
  77. NOTE: Because it is up to the application vendor to set this value when 
  78. installing Win32s, the value may not be accurate. Microsoft strongly 
  79. urges all independent software vendors (ISVs) to modify the WIN32S.INI 
  80. file so that this information is available to customers.

  84. 2.If Win32s is installed on top of Windows for Workgroups, select the 
  85. WIN32S16.DLL file from the Windows system directory in File Manager. 
  86. Then from the File menu, choose Properties. The Version line contains 
  87. the major version and the build number.

  90. TO REMOVE AN EXISTING VERSION OF WIN32S:
  91. ----------------------------------------
  92. 1.Remove the following line from the [386Enh] section in the SYSTEM.INI 
  93. file:
  94.  
  95.            device=<WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\win32s\w32s.386
  96.  
  97. where <WINDOWS> and <SYSTEM> are where the Windows and System 
  98. directories are, respectively.
  99.  
  100. 2.Modify the following line from the [BOOT] section in the SYSTEM.INI 
  101. file:

  103.            drivers=mmsystem.dll winmm16.dll
  104.  
  105. to the following (remove winmm16.dll):
  106.  
  107.            drivers=mmsystem.dll
  108.  
  109. 3.Delete the following files from the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM> subdirectory or 
  110. from the SYSTEM directory in network installations:
  111.  
  112.            WINMM16.DLL
  113.            W32SYS.DLL
  114.            WIN32S16.DLL
  115.            WIN32S.INI
  116.            WINHLP32.EXE
  117.            WINDOWS.HLP
  118.            WINHLP32.HLP
  119.            WINHLP32.CNT
  120.  
  121. Note: It may not be possible to delete W32SYS.DLL while Windows is 
  122. running. This occurs if you ran some Win32 application. It is 
  123. recommended that you remove Win32s while in MS-DOS, not from an MS-DOS 
  124. box.

  126. 4.Delete all the files in the <WINDOWS>\<SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory or 
  127. the <SYSTEM>\WIN32S subdirectory in network installations. Then delete 
  128. subdirectory itself.

  130. 5.Restart Windows.

  132. NOTE: <WINDOWS> refers to the windows installation directory. On a 
  133. networked Windows installation, the system directory may be located on a 
  134. remote share. If you are only removing Win32s from your machine, then 
  135. you do not need to remove the shared files (in <SYSTEM> and 
  136. <SYSTEM>\WIN32S). Before removing these files from the network share, 
  137. make sure that all users that use Win32s have removed the references to 
  138. Win32s from the SYSTEM.INI file.
