I. Introduction
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
X-View is a powerful user interface which gives you control over your
disk and harddrives as well as CD-ROMs and lets you perform a variety of
file operations such as copy, delete, create directories and many more with
the EASE of a mouse-click.
X-View Features:
(*) All filecopy routienes are optimized to give you max. speed performance
(*) Only 832 Bytes are used while running other programs (this may vary
slightly from computer to computer)
(*) NO EMS or XMS memory is used by X-View, therefore there are no
memory limits for applications.
(*) Core of X-View is programmed in 100% Assembly language.
(*) User interface is fully Microsoft(R) Windows(TM) compatible.
(*) User defined F-key functions let you take controll at light-speed.
(*) One can custom define helpers for virtually any file extension. This
will allow you to unpack *.ZIP files with a simple double klick of the
mouse, for example.
(*) X-View does not take up much disk space
(*) Fully Pentium and Pentium PRO compatible
II. Getting Your Feet Wet
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You'll need a ½ gallon of water...;) To start X-View, simply go to the
directory where XVIEW is located and type XVIEW at the DOS prompt. This will
take you to the main menu which consists of a pull-down menu on the top left
corner of your screen and six drives (the disk icons) and a trash can
(the magnet).
!Note: X-View must be located on a harddrive to function properly.
By this century, you are probably familiar with pull-down menues,
double clicks (ey, simply click the mousebutton twice) and the like.
So I dare to advance to some more 'advanced' material...
III. The Basics
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Windows follow the common standards: Left upper corner will close
the window, the status-bar can be used to move the window, the right upper
button maximizes the window's size, and the right lower button will resize
the window. The bar on the right shows how much area in the window is
'visible' and can be used to scroll window contents up and down.
A double-click on virtually any icon will activate it. This results
either in execution of a program (*.EXE, *.COM or *.BAT) or in displaying
the contents of a file. Should the icon be a subdirectory (up/down arrow) or
a disk-station, the contents of that directory will be displayed (same as the
DOS command: cd XYZ). If SETUP.EXE was used to define 'hot-extentions' like
'pkunzip xview_select' for *.ZIP files for example, then those will be
decrunched if activated.
!!! Files can be selected with the LEFT mouse button and then 'dragged',
holding the RIGHT mouse button. You might dragg the files in another open
window to copy them or into the magnet to delete them.
IV. Mastering The Keyboard
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What will follow, is a listing of all keyboard functions:
<+> ---- selecting all files (not subdirectories!) in the
current directory.
<-> ---- unselect everything.
<F1-F10> ---- The F-keys can be custom defined to perform
frequently used commands, such as edit a file,
show a picture, or simply start a program.
->also look up SETFKEY.EXE description.
<Esc> ---- re-read the contents of the current directory
(such as after changing disks)
<other keys> ---- lets you enter a DOS command.
<Ctrl>+<?> ---- shortcuts for main functions in X-View such as
Statistics, Make new directory e.t.c
The SETFKEY.EXE program is found in the xview subdirectory and represents
one of the tools that come with X-View. When started, the user can define
all F-keys (the F11 and F12 keys are not yet supported). To get more infor-
mation about the use of F-keys, click on the HELP button in the SETFKEY
program.
V. The Pull-Down Menu
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This really should be self-explanatory. All of the functions just
simply do what they are named after. I'll just address a couple topics
one of which is the STATUS function. This is a rather universal function and
can be applied on ANYTHING selected. It can be used, for example, to find
out, how much space is still available on a diskette or how many Bytes
all selected files have.
The rename function not only renames files, it also renames DISK-DRIVES!
If you should have a hard-drive called 'Z' for example, you could change
any of the shown disk icons on the top of the screen to 'Z' to be able to
access that drive as well.
VI. Artists
~~~~~~~~~~~
To make X-View more pleasant to the eye, one has the option to
custom design everything. The ICON_ED.EXE can be used to repaint all
icons, including the disk symbols. With the SETUPCOL.EXE one can change
the colors. The SETFKEY.EXE custom defines all the F-keys. So, its all
in your hands, just grabb your favorite mouse and go right at it!!
VII. Troubleshooting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You may get an error message saying: 'Mouse not installed'. A mouse is
an absolute requirement for X-View. A solution to this is making sure, that a
mouse is connected to your computer and that a mouse driver is present. Try
typing HELP in your C:\DOS directory.
If X-View refuses to start and tells you 80386 CPU required, then that's
how it is: To maximize performance, X-View uses 80386 optimized code. You
have to have at least a 80386 or better CPU.
VII. Disclaimer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been using this program in replacement for DOS or Windows for
several years now and there are no known bugs. X-View performs safely and
has also several Error detection routienes which will catch any messages
from DOS, such as 'DISK WRITE PROTECTED!' and others.
However, I will not take any responsibility for anything that might
happen when you use X-VIEW. If your computer blows up just when you started
X-View, than that's the risk you gotta take....;)
In addition, NO part of this program may be altered or commercially
distributed without my prior consent. (English: copy my program if you
wish to friends & others, but don't sell or change it - this includes this
text, any of the programs included with the X-View package and the
credits - who made the program e.t.c...you know the rest).
However, if you would like to include X-View on a new FREEWARE CD, you may
do so, provided X-View stays as is (in a package w/ SETUP.EXE e.t.c).
VIII. Free-ware
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The usual in the end. For one thing I hate any kind of limitations and
have therefore decided to leave this software as is - FULLY functional!
However, should X-View accidentally survive longer than four weeks on your
harddrive, you might want to consider sending me $10,-. In return you will
get the absolutely latest version of X-View including any utilities that I
might have developed at that point and a nice detailed document about the
very last tricks and tips about X-View. Just think of were PC's were without
shareware and people who make shareware - people like me and other
programmer freaks out there that enjoy a good feedback from you folks!
*Should there be enough demand, I might translate X-View into German
