Readme File
August 1998
This Readme file contains information you may
find helpful as you start using your Everyday
Home Repairs program.
---------------------------------------------
* Everyday Home Repairs requires the
following minimum system configuration for
successful operation:
- IBM or 100% compatible PC with
a 486SX 25 MHz processor.
- 8 megabytes RAM.
- Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later in
enhanced mode or Windows 95.
- Microsoft or compatible mouse or other
pointing device.
- 256-color display device.
- Sound card and speakers.
Additional RAM or faster processor will
enhance system performance. We recommend at
least a 486SX 66 MHz processor and 16 MB RAM.
In addition, a Highcolor graphics adapter
(65,536-color display) will enhance the
visual elements of the program.
* The first thing Everyday Home Repairs does
when it opens is play a video clip. If your
computer crashes when Everyday Home Repairs
opens, the problem is most likely due to a
video driver conflict. (Contact your video
card's manufacturer for updated drivers.)
You can bypass the videos altogether by
running Everyday Home Repairs from the
command line (choose Run from the Program
Manager File menu or the Task bar) using
this syntax:
EHR -n
* If the on-screen text looks incorrect or
does not fit the space where it appears,
check to make sure you have the standard
Windows Arial font installed. Refer to your
Windows documentation for instructions on how
to install fonts.
* If you notice clipping of text in the Tools
and Materials areas, or if the text in the
electronic registration form is incomplete or
unreadable, change your video setup from
Large Fonts to Small Fonts. Be sure to reboot
your machine so that the change takes effect.
* If you are running at a resolution greater
than 640 x 480, Everyday Home Repairs does
not fill the entire screen and a black
background is used to eliminate the
distraction of other applications. This black
frame is normal.
* To optimize quality, Everyday Home Repairs
uses all 256 colors and relinquishes them
when switching to another application. As a
result, you may see funny colors and color
changes in the background when you use the
Alt+Tab key combination to move to another
application or to the Windows Program
Manager. This is normal and should not affect
the operation of Everyday Home Repairs or any
of your other applications.
* If you notice that video and audio are not
synchronized, try reducing from your current
color setting to the use of only 256 colors.
However, on slower machines, Microsoft Video
for Windows can't always keep up with both
the audio and video portions of a movie. To
compensate, video frames may be dropped in
order to preserve the integrity of the audio.
Other than upgrading your system, there is no
solution.
* The Everyday Home Repairs internal volume
control may not work with all sound cards.
If changing the volume within Everyday Home
Repairs has no effect, use your sound card
mixer to adjust the volume.
* If you see odd colors, distortions, or
lines in the movies, check that you have the
most recent driver for your video device.
Contact the manufacturer for an update.
Or, an alternative desktop, disk or RAM
compression software, or CD-ROM accelerator
might be interfering. Disable any of these
that you're using to try to eliminate the
conflict.
* Difficulty printing may be due to an
outdated printer driver. Contact the
manufacturer for an update. Suggestions for
enhancing print quality are provided in the
online Help.
