  14. Palladam.bmap contains the bitmaps. Use Font/DA Mover to add the
  15. Palladam Tamil Font to your System.
  16.  
  17. Drag the icon that shows the number 1 (on a sheet of paper at an 
  18. angle)
  19. on top of a laser printer (with the name Palla) into the System Folder
  20. for use by PostScript-compatible printer.

  27. "Palladam" was developed using Fontographer, which generates the
  28. bitmaps as well as the necessary PostScript files.
  29.  
  30. The screen bitmap fonts are not very "pretty". However, they print
  31. nicely on a laser printer. They should also print reasonably well on
  32. an Imagewriter. For ease of use while you are in a word processor, I
  33. recommend that you type using Size 18, and print using Size 10 or
  34. 12. (The letters of the same size look larger for Palladam than for
  35. other fonts. Therefore, size 12, for instance, requires more space
  36. than a size 12 Courier or other font. This has not been a problem
  37. for me. I normally print in 10 or 12 size, and use 1 1/2 spacing.)

  39. I do have a bitmap font (written using Fontastic Plus) that I may
  40. decide to distribute (under the same conditions, free) after I fix
  41. some inconsistencies. That font "looks" nicer on the screen.

  43. Keyboard mappings
  44.  
  45. Tamil letters have been mapped to English letters by sound and/or 
  46. type
  47. (vowels or consonants).  While I have mapped most letters to letters
  48. normally used for them, (e.g., z for zh), the letters Q, W, X, and B
  49. (as well as [ and ]) have been used somewhat arbitrarily.  My
  50. justification is that I had to find some letters and the ones I found
  51. were the most convenient.

  53. Back quote (`) is used for the dot required for the consonants.
  54.  
  55. Option and Shift Option keys are used to represent the conjugations
  56. of consonants with vowels.
  57.  
  58. Option-<number> are used for most combinations, with Option-7 and
  59. Option-8 used for (d + i) and (d + i_) respectively.
  60. Option-1,2,3,4,5,6,and 9 are used for the additions required for
  61. i, i_, e, e_, ai, a_, and ai (traditional form).

  63. Option-<letter> is used for the combination <consonant + u>, with
  64. exceptions shown above (nu as in Bhanu = option [ (try [[ if a
  65. single [ does nothing),  nu as in anu (atom) = option-/,
  66. nu as in nurai (foam) = shift-option-n).

  68. Shift-Option-<letter> is used for the combination <consonant + u_>,
  69. with the exception shown above (nu_ as in nu_l (book, thread) =
  70. shift-option-o).

  132. The incentive for writing this font has been my mother. She never
  133. asked that I write her using a computer, but I wanted to do it
  134. anyway! Though my folks would prefer to see my handwriting

  136. than some mechanized version of it, they have gotten used to it and

  138. family, in the US and in India. They deserve all the credit, and I

  157. Background and a brief history
  158.  
  159. I (T. Govindaraj) wrote this font over a period of about a year.
  160. It has been modified almost continuously. Since I could not find
  161. a commercially available font that I liked, I decided to create
  162. one. It took a rather long time since my professorial responsibilities
  163. in the top industrial and systems engineering program in the US left
  164. me with little spare time.  While there is always room for 
  165. improvement,
  166. I decided to release the font at this time (July 1990) since it appears
  167. usable at the current state of its development.

  169. The font is named after the little town where I come from. I am
  170. actually from a "suburb" of Palladam.
  171.  
  172. Since my background is engineering and not linguistics or Tamil
  173. literature, I had to use letter mappings that seemed reasonable.
  174. I am open to suggestions concerning mappings that may be more
  175. appropriate. However, I do not know when I will be able to make
  176. any major changes.
  177.  
  178. Even though the font was developed on an Apple Macintosh II, it is
  179. very unlikely that I will do more work on a Mac font. While I was
  180. an admirer and promoter of the user interface philosophy 
  181. popularized
  182. by Apple, I have been extremely unhappy with Apple's attitude
  183. concerning the "look and feel" issue and their legal "maneuvers".
  184. As a past user of Xerox lisp machines and a current user of Sun and
  185. NeXT machines, I have not been happy with what Apple is doing. I 
  186. do
  187. not plan to recommend or purchase any more Apple computers until
  188. Apple adopts a more egalitarian attitude.
  189.  
  190. I am an admirer and supporter of the Free Software Foundation
  191. (FSF).  I plan to develop the Palladam Tamil Font into ghostscript
  192. compatible form and turn over complete control to FSF. In the 
  193. meantime,
  194. I have decided to retain the copyright and impose minimal 
  195. restrictions
  196. on the use and distribution of Palladam Tamil Font. The restrictions
  197. and terms are in the spirit of GNU General Public License from FSF.

  199. Versions of this font for other computers and operating systems
  200. may become available at some later date.
