CONVERT
Version 3.0

INTRODUCTION
Different sound cards and software often make use of different and
incompatible formats for files they use to record sounds on disk.
Convert offers a way to translate sound files between several common
formats.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
CONVERT can understand all Covox sound file formats as well as .VOC
and .WAV files. It can translate these formats to any of the formats
it understands, except .VMD and .VMF files.
CONVERT has two mode of operation. If run without any command line
parameters, it operates in "menu mode". Menu mode allows the easy
selection of files to convert using a point and shoot type of
interface.
CONVERT can also be run completely from the command line, allowing
easy use from within batch files, or quick "one shot" conversions for
which menus are unnecessary.
When Covert is started in menu mode, a list of options will be
displayed horizontally across the top of the screen. These
selections are arranged, from left to right, in the order they are
likely to be used. You can navigate the selections using the cursor
keys on your keyboard to move the highlight through the selections.
When the selection you want is highlighted, press <Return>. Pressing
<Esc> at any time backs you out of the current menu.
The main menu selections are:
OPTIONS:
Selecting this brings up a submenu of a number of
parameters that will affect any conversions made.
The parameters listed here are:
Playback Rate: Selecting this allows you to specify
the speed at which the converted files will
be played back. This rate is specified in
Hertz. Specifying zero for this option tells
CONVERT to keep the same playback rate as in
the original file. NOTE: Not all possible
rates can be specified, so after you enter a
value here, it will be changed to match the
closest valid value.
Silence Threshold: This only has an effect when you
are converting to a format with Silence
encoding. This value can be from 0 to 5, and
specifies how many units from dead silence
CONVERT will still consider as silence.
Treble Output: This toggles between 'Y' and 'N',
telling CONVERT to add more treble to the
resulting file. Only effective when
converting from .V4S, .V3S, and .V2S file
formats.
Noise Fill: This toggles between 'Y' and 'N', and is
only effective when converting from .V4S,
.V3S, and .V2S file formats. Causes silence
to be replaced by low level noise.
Dest. Path: Specifies the directory the resulting
converted files are to be placed in. This
defaults to the directory you are in when you
run CONVERT. The current destination path is
always displayed at the bottom of the screen.
FILE MASKS:
By default, CONVERT will only see files with
extensions representing the file formats it knows.
You can change the file masks in this menu. A file
mask is a list of file masks, separated by commas,
semicolons, or spaces. If a file name matches any of
the file masks on this list, it will be displayed in
the directory window.
SORTING:
This allows the directory window to be sorted
according to your tastes. Has no other effect on the
program's operation.
FORMAT:
This brings up a menu allowing you to specify which
format you wish to convert to. The current target
format is always displayed at the bottom of the
screen
CONVERT:
Brings up a menu to perform the actual conversions:
The menu has three options:
Select files to convert: When you pick this, a
highlight bar will appear in the directory window.
This bar can be moved around using the cursor keys.
You then need to select which files you want to
convert by moving the highlight to them, and pressing
either <Return> or the spacebar. A check mark will
appear next to the file name to indicate that you
have selected that file. If you mistakenly select
the wrong file, pressing <Return> on it again will
deselect it.
Names that appear in angle brackets ( < and > ) are
directories. Pressing <Return> on these changes the
directory being displayed. You can select any
number of files, in any directories you wish. When
you have selected all the files you want to convert,
press <Esc>.
Convert All Selected Files: Selecting this item will
initiate the conversion off all the files you have
selected using the "Select Files to Convert" option.
Exit Convert: This is the same as pressing <Esc>
from the main menu, allowing you to leave the
program.
