Labels:text OCR: Right on top of the hill is an amazing fort built in the Victorian period to protect London. In 1889, Parliament passed a law to allow a string of 13 forts to be built protecting routes to London. Each fort at a strategic point, was to be manned by volunteers. The fort wasn't designed for guns and artillery, but consisted of concrete ramparts which protected trenches where the infantry would fight from. Narrow passages lit with oil lamps led into the magazines in which ammunition was stored. We know from documents that the fort cost £4714 to build and was completed in 1900. K
