Jane Austen wrote about Box Hill in her book 'Emma' which was published in 1816: 'We are going to Box Hill tomorrow; - you will join us. It is not Switzerland, but it will be something for a young man so much in want of change'......'Even Emma grew tired at last of flattery and merriment, and wished herself rather walking quietly about with any of the others, or sitting almost alone, and quite unattended to, in tranquil observation of the beautiful views beneath her'). The mention of Switzerland, is because at this time, many of the wealthier English people were travelling there as tourists to see the Alps.
