"An Evening Standard reporter who was going from London to Dorking between 7 and 8 O'clock last evening passed a queue three cars deep and two and half miles long, to the south of Leatherhead. Almost every car was laden with bluebells, and from a hill many of the cars looked as if they had been decorated for a floral fete. I climbed to the top of Box Hill (writes the reporter) and watched the procession of cars moving down from the Guildford road, from Leith Hill, and from the Worthing road into Dorking. There was one long cloud of dust winding through the countryside for miles. As dusk fell, the scene was more striking still, with the serpent-like trail of headlights twisting through the dark countryside."
