His ideas led to the Trust's 'Country Houses Scheme'. Under this scheme a house may be presented to the Trust with a financial endowment to maintain it for ever. For the donor no further tax on the property is payable, yet they could continue to live in the house, subject to public access and measures to retain the essential character of the property.
