OCR: Management Management Water Water is a precious resource at Wicken. It presents the Trust staff with a big challenge. Wicken is an island of wildlife and habitats, standing higher than the surrounding land. With improved drainage, the surrounding land has shrunk and the water table has been lowered. The lowering of the water table is a great threat to Wicken and this is made worse in dry years when there is less rainfall. Because Wicken Fen is now higher than the surrounding farmland, water tends to run out of the reserve. This can be very bad for the plants and animals which rely on a high water level. It also floods the farmer's fields preventing them from growing crops.
