This means different areas are cut at. various times so there is always sedge at a range of ages for the plants and animals. The work is done in the high summer and the cut sedge is gathered with forks and tied into bundles called 'yealms'. These are then made into rough stacks which can often be seen at Wicken. Sedge is still used for thatching.
