Labels:text | plant | tree | screenshot OCR: Management Carr Management Carr covers about two thirds of the Fen POLLARDING and if it was left, it would take over the Fen and gradually turn to mature woodland. Although this might look attractive, it would mean the wide range of habitats at Wicken would be lost. Areas of carr are cleared and its spread is controlled at the edges. Cut wood is left in piles as these form a habitat for insects, such as beetles, as well as fungi and mosses .. Larger trees among the carr are checked to see how healthy they are and some are pollarded. Dead wood is left to rot and standing dead wood can be left if it is not a danger to people passing underneath. This is particularly good for beetles and fungi, in fact some of the rare species at Wicken are only found on one or two dead trunks.
