11th - 16th Century 1086 - Wicken is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It is called Wicha and was owned by someone called Count Acha. 12th and 13th centuries - Digging of peat had become very common in the Fens. It was cut, dried and used for fuel on fires. A number of small attempts were made to drain the Fens.
