Pollarding involves cutting a tree at about 2 metres from the ground. Beech and oak are the two species commonly used. Regular pollarding increases the lifespan of trees as well as producing timber. A pollarded tree usually has a large sturdy trunk and provides a good habitat for many insects, beetles and spiders. These days pollarding is not used very widely.
