D2F and F2D: Disk distribution software for MSX and PC
Copyright (c) 1995 XelaSoft
Leiden, May 12th 1995
The files in this archive are designed to make it easier to distribute
complete autoboot disks for MSX via email, modem and ftp.
Many auto boot disks on MSX have no directory structure. The only
way to distribute those disks is to copy the entire contents of
such a disk to a file, distribute that file and later copy such a
file onto another empty disk.
However, when using this method one problem exists; a file containing
a mirror copy of a disk is to large to fit on a same sized disk with a
directory structure. In the past, this problem has been solved by copying the
disk in parts, compressing each part separately and putting these parts into
one archive. The compression and archiving part has always been done with
PMARC as this is the best compression program available for MSX.
So, why should you bother about using some other method to distribute entire
disks? Well, there are three good reasons:
1) The archive function of PMARC contains a bug, which can cause 'broken
archive' errors when the archive file is large.
2) PMARC and PMEXT (the corresponding decompression program) are only available
for CP/M and MSX. Though, many MSX users nowadays have a fast PC next to
their MSX or they only have a fast PC or other computer system with a MSX
emulator. These computer systems can decompress many times faster then an
(emulated) MSX computer. So, it would be nice when those people can
decompress the disk archives with some native program for their fast PC,
UNIX computer or whatever they have.
3) Using the combination of PMARC, PMEXT and some other tools to distribute
disks is not an easy way to do it. Especially when you have a MSX with only
one diskdrive, decompressing the archive and copying it to a disk has to be
done by hand. In such a case, it can hardly be automated using some batch
files.
To solve these distribution problems, I have made two programs:
D2F, which stands for 'Disk to File' and F2D, which stands for 'File to Disk'.
The first program reads an entire disk and compresses it to one file. The
second program does the opposite; it decompresses a file and copies it to
a disk. Currently I have developed both a MSX and a PC version of these
programs and in the near future I will port the programs to some 'popular'
UNIX platforms: I will make binaries for the HP-700 series, SUN Sparc stations
and Silicon Graphics Indigo stations. The UNIX versions will compress and
decompress from file to file.
Both D2F and F2D are public domain. I do hope these program's, and their UNIX
counterparts, will become a defacto standard in the MSX (emulator) world.
D2F.COM and F2D.COM can be run from MSX DOS.
D2F.EXE and F2D.EXE can be run from MS DOS.
The programs are self explanatory when you start them without any command line
parameters.
