  1.                         How to manage hypertext cross-links

  4. Once you've entered all the angle-bracket links between files, the REFALL
  5. program <FILE64 DESCRIPTION> lets you see and analyze your link structure.
  6.  
  7. You can set the REFALL program to read a single file, a class of file, or
  8. all files in a directory.  The program automatically locates all angle
  9. bracket filenames in each ASCII file and creates a MaxThink format file
  10. listing these cross-links.
  11.  
  12. For example, if the REFALL program reads each of a set of 500 ASCII files,
  13. the program creates an outline with 500 angle-bracket filename topics.  The
  14. subtopics of each would contain the angle-bracket filenames of the
  15. cross-links found in each topic.  Together, this list contains the master
  16. map of all the hypertext links in the ASCII files.  <FILE30 BUILDING>

  18. I load this REFALL list into MaxThink or HOUDINI for further analysis.
  19. For example, HOUDINI easily shows the hierarchical and circular structures
  20. of my cross links.

  22. To locate knowledge areas, I use the FILE OUTPUT command of HOUDINI
  23. which automatically identifies the natural network partitions.  The natural
  24. partition is the complete set of ASCII files that each file in the set may
  25. cross-link to.

  27. Once I've identified my natural partition, I use HOUDINI to organize a
  28. separate knowledge network covering just that subject area.  Again, this
  29. approach reduces the circularity of the overall hypertext system.

  31. Having completed the ASCII linking, I use our IC program (Integrity Checker)
  32. to verify each cross-link.

  34. The IC program uses the REFALL file, then tries to open each file listed in
  35. the complete system.  The IC program finds errors in naming and references
  36. to non-existent files.

  38. For example, the types of hypertext cross-link error I want to avoid are:

  46. The REFALL, IC programs along with MaxThink and HOUDINI eliminate these
  47. types of hypertext cross-link errors.
