  22.      We do hereby authorise Mamoru Shigemitsu, Zyosanmi, First
  23. Class of the Imperial Order of the Rising Sun to attach his
  24. signature by command and in behalf of Ourselves and Our
  25. Government unto the Instrument of Surrender which is required
  26. by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers to be signed.

  28.      In witness whereof, We have hereunto set Our signature and
  29. caused the Great Seal of the Empire to be affixed.

  94.         I N S T R U M E N T   O F   S U R R E N D E R

  97.      We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of
  98. Japan, the Japanese Government and the Japanese Imperial General
  99. Headquarters, hereby accept the provisions set forth in the
  100. declaration issued by the heads of the Governments of the United
  101. States, China, and Great Britain on 26 July 1945 at Potsdam, and
  102. subsequently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Repub-
  103. lics, which four powers are hereafter referred to as the Allied
  104. Powers.
  105.  
  106.      We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied
  107. Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all
  108. Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under the Japanese
  109. control wherever situated.
  110.  
  111.      We hereby command all Japanese forces wherever situated and
  112. the Japanese people to cease hostilites forthwith, to preserve
  113. and save from damage all ships, aircraft, and military and civil
  114. property and to comply with all requirements which my be imposed
  115. by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers or by agencies of
  116. the Japanese Government at his direction.
  117.  
  118.      We hereby command the Japanese Imperial Headquarters to issue
  119. at once orders to the Commanders of all Japanese forces and all 
  120. forces under Japanese control wherever situated to surrender un-
  121. conditionally themselves and all forces under their control.
  122.  
  123.      We hereby command all civil, military and naval officials to
  124. obey and enforce all proclamations, and orders and directives deemed
  125. by the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers to be proper to ef-
  126. fectuate this surrender and issued by him or under his authority
  127. and we direct all such officials to remain at their posts and to
  128. continue to perform their non-combatant duties unless specifically
  129. relieved by him or under his authority.

  131.      We hereby undertake for the Emperor, the Japanese Government
  132. and their successors to carry out the provisions of the Potsdam
  133. Declaration in good faith, and to issue whatever orders and take
  134. whatever actions may be required by the Supreme Commander for the
  135. Allied Poers or by any other designated representative of the
  136. Allied Powers for the purpose of giving effect to that Declaration.
  137.  
  138.      We hereby command the Japanese Imperial Government and the
  139. Japanese Imperial General Headquarters at once to liberate all
  140. allied prisoners of war and civilian internees now under Japanese
  141. control and to provide for their protection, care, maintenance and
  142. immediate transportation to places as directed.
  143.  
  144.      The authority of the Emperor and the Japanese Government to
  145. rule the state shall be subject to the Supreme Commander for the
  146. Allied Powers who will take such steps as he deems proper to ef-
  147. fectuate these terms of surrender.

  212.      Accepting the terms set forth in the Declaration issued
  213. by the heads of the Governments of the United States, Great
  214. Britain, and China on July 26th, 1945 at Potsdam and subse-
  215. quently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics,
  216. We have commanded the Japanese Imperial Government and the
  217. Japanese Imperial General Headquarters to sign on Our behalf
  218. the Instrument of Surrender presented by the Supreme Commander
  219. for the Allied Powers and to issue General Orders to the Military
  220. and Naval Forces in accordance with the direction of the
  221. Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers.  We command all Our
  222. people forthwith to cease hostilities, to lay down their arms
  223. and faithfully to carry out all the provisions of Instrument
  224. of Surrender and the General Orders issued by the Japanese 
  225. Imperial General Headquarters hereunder.
