  1. Announcing the official beta release of Info-ZIP's Zip and UnZip for Risc OS.

  7. Info-ZIP's Zip/UnZip suite is a collection of programs written to perform 
  8. file compression and decompression based upon the zipfile routines as used 
  9. by Phil Katz (PKWARE) in PKZIP (for DOS). Its main advantage is its porta-
  10. bility. It has been ported to many hundreds of computer platforms, and now 
  11. has been applied to Acorn's Risc OS machines.
  12.  
  13. Archiving? Hasn't that been covered by Spark?
  14. --------------------------------------------

  16. One of the driving forces behind the porting of Info-ZIP's code was the 
  17. inavailability of a free, professional archiver for Risc OS. Spark is a 
  18. commercial product, and good at that, but it is not free and is limited 
  19. to the Acorn world.  Info-ZIP's software is copyrighted but free and is 
  20. available together with source code for anyone who wants to use it. As an 
  21. additional feature, Info-ZIP routines have been observed to give better 
  22. compression than the David Pilling programs, while taking less time to do 
  23. it. However, at the moment they are cli-only - ie you have to type the 
  24. commands into a taskwindow.  This will change in the near future, with 
  25. the advent of a frontend, and possible Image filing system (this is a long 
  26. way down the authors' priority list, however).

  28. CLI? Yuk! Who would want to use it?

  31. Zip/UnZip have the advantage that they can read and write archives from 
  32. many different computer platforms. Basically, any Unix, VMS, DOS, Mac, 
  33. Atari, Amiga, Win NT or OS/2 system, amongst rarer systems.

  35. Yeah, but surely it can't deal with filetypes and Risc OS pathnames.

  38. The Acorn ports of Zip/UnZip handle filetypes and translate pathnames
  39. totally transparently. They can handle extentions to the point that they
  40. can even sort your 'c' code out into the Acorn-format directories, then
  41. reverse the procedure when you re-archive the files.

  43. What about encryption? Being a US product it *can't* do that, can it?

  46. Zipfiles can contain encryption devices for the entire archive, or select
  47. files in the archive. Passwords are of significant length, and can
  48. be verified (entered twice) to ensure correct entry. Once encrypted,
  49. the file(s) cannot be retrieved without the correct password(s).
  50. Due to US (munitions) export laws, all US distributions of the source
  51. and executables are stripped of their 'zcrypt' capabilities, but any
  52. non-US sites can store the complete systems.

  57. The first release is an official beta release. This means executables only. 
  58. This is done deliberately, as if errors are discovered, the authors will 
  59. make the changes, not you as users. The sources will be included in the next 
  60. public releases of Info-ZIP's Zip and UnZip. They can be compiled easily 
  61. using Acorn desktop C or GNU GCC.

  63. Bet this is version 1.00. You can never trust v1.00.

  77. The announcements for the source release will coincide with the next
  78. Info-ZIP releases. They will be posted to comp.sys.acorn.announce. This
  79. should take place it a few months, but it may be a bit longer - they are
  80. being held up by other ports and a dissertation, and syncronising with 
  81. releases is easier said than done.

  86. Releases have been made to the official Info-ZIP mirror site as
  87. ftp://ftp.uu.net/pub/archiving/zip/RISCOS/
  88. and the designated acorn-port sites of:
  89. ftp://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~compsoc/public_html/aftp/acorn/infozip/

  91. Non-US users are urged to use the european or australian site, as the jpl
  92. site one does not contain the encryption instruments. (Decryption is
  93. supported in all versions of UnZip.) Please ensure you use BINARY transfer 
  94. as this will seriously affect the performance of the resulting files (free 
  95. tip #1). There are a few files in the directories:

  97. betarel.spk        Spark-Arc of the beta release. Use SparkPlug.
  98. betarel.zip        Zip of the beta release. Use either infozip or
  99.             SparkFS/Sparkplug ( > v2.22)
  100. The rest of the files are either documentation or executables. Filetype
  101. them as 'absolute', and run them from a taskwindow or command-line.
  102.  
  103. Please note these are likely to be uploaded to more conventional acorn
  104. ftp sites and BBSs shortly. The authors will not be responsible for this,
  105. and will release latest versions to the official sites only. Therefore,
  106. if you find a problem with your current version, please get the latest
  107. from the official site before proceeding with a bug or 'help!' report.
