A CHANCE MEETING WITH FREDDIE - 1982
------------------------------------
Arlene Jenson meets
Freddie Mercury.
NBC Studios New York City.
I didn't know that Queen were in town, so as I turned the
corner and saw Freddie on the street, my heart stopped.
I really had to convince myself that it really was him.
I went closer and could hear an arguement between Freddie
and another man. I didn't hear any of the arguement until
near it's end, so don't know fully what it was about. I do
know that that the other man was loud and rude. He called
Freddie a queer. Freddie then told him to "Fuck Off". The
other man said that Freddie wouldn't know what to do with a
girl - even if she came with "instructions!" At this point
Freddie said, "So Fuck Yourself!" and dismissed the man,
who then left.
Freddie looked towards me and indicated with his finger to
go over to him. At first I thought he meant someone else,
and I turned around to look behind me. There was no one else
there and Freddie laughed at my mistake. I felt sure he was
about to shout at me for listening to the aruement, but
instead he pointed to a cat-pin I was wearing and asked if I
liked cats. I told him I had four and he visibly relaxed -
all the stuff which had just happened seemed to be
forgotten.
I suppose he thought I was a friend because I had all those
cats. Freddie then went in to the building we were outside,
with his escort and I thought that was the end of my
adventure with him, but he held the door open and said "Well
come on in", so in I went.
The studio was on the 8th floor (I think!) and we went up in
the elevator together - the other members of the band were
there too and I managed to shake their hands, thought they
were keeping away from Freddie and must have been used to
this type of thing and knew it would blow over soon.
Freddie mostly wanted to talk about cats, but he did make a
joke about my feet being small. I'm a rather large person,
and I answered, "Nothing grows in the shade!" which Freddie
thought was quite funny.
I was quite impressed with Freddie's speaking voice. This
was 1982, and I hadn't a video recorder, so I had not heard
Freddie speak - I knew only the musical voice.
Once in the studio, Freddie was busy with the staging and
soundcheck (or whatever), but it was a priviledge to look
around at things while Freddie, Brian, John and Roger were
otherwise engaged.
Freddie said "goodbye", he was 'going out' until it was
showtime. I thanked him and the other boys, and wished it
could have lasted longer, but it really was great while it
lasted.
I think I caught him at moment when he was vunerable. He was
not embarrassed, his temper flared and was gone in an
instant. Luckly he didn't take it out on me, or I would
have been devastated.
So, there were no great revelations, just a chance meeting
which was over far too soon. I recall floating home to
people who didn't even know of Queen. Not did they care, but
it was a moment I will never forget.
Arlene Jenson.

“Thanks a lot for sharing the above with us Arlene, I know
through your letters that you thought maybe no one else
would be interested in this 'chance meeting', but I think
they will. Some fans who live in distant corners of the
globe, (which Queen didn't even manage to visit or perform
in) will be fascinated and jealous by your meeting”.
